Here are my planning sketches:
20250608_182514.webp
I loosely used my own family crest as the basis and then messed up the direction of something lol. I don't consider that a Powelevel as I'd be very impressed if someone doxed me off of my heraldic argent piles.

Cow skull and Kiwis are self explanatory, the roundel is intended to represent the moon.

I went with barley in the background to signify a bountiful harvest and also to represent the booze no doubt drank by many while reading through the site.

Thistles represent defense and hardiness.

Shading and Contrast
Greetings, Happy Fathers Day for all who are/have/had a dad that mean or meant a lot to you/your kids. You know whose not such a great dad? Nick Rekieta, and this challenge goes out to all the bad fathers battling their inner ceiling cats.

Make a ceiling cat or paralysis demon in the corner. Below are some techniques on how to use lines to create details for shading, shadows, and general contrast within a piece.

Excuse my crude examples. I tried to limit myself time wise, they didn't entirely come out the way I wanted but hope they illustrate what the challenge is asking for. The cat in the top left has more of a mirrored shadow, the reference had reflective tiles on the wall.

The shading techniques shown can achieve a variety of details on a drawing, how hard the line is made on paper or the space between the strokes can amplify the effect. The space between lines can also increase depth of detail: sparse vs bunched. Pressure applied to a tool when making the line or detail can also determine depth: soft vs firm lines.

For digital, the pressure applied on the stylus will determine a similar effect but depends more on how your software is configured.

Hatching - straight lines going in 1 direction.
Cross-hatch - intersecting lines in a crisscross manner
Circulism - looping circles continuously
Contouring - similar to hatching but using the lines to follow the geometry of the object or surface
Scribbles - the "anything goes" technique, quickest but also messier and incoherent
Stippling - single dotted marks
Short Dashes - similar to hatching but shorter strokes
Blending - through the use of a paper smudge or finger, you can achieve a smoothed gradient
3s - repeated use of a number to achieve somewhat of a textured detail
Zig Zags - jagged lines to achieve detail similar to contouring

There are other types of shading techniques but these are the typical ones people use.

Contrast is how separated the 2 shades of colors or values are from each other. If something has high contrast, the difference is more stark or obvious ie: a light and a dark color. For low contrast, 2 light shades together or 2 dark shades will be more closer in value.

Since white and black are still technically the same "color" and to touch on colors generally for a moment, the principle still applies to the wheel:

The light source determines the location and gradients of shading shown on the subject.
1750026509958.webp
Highlight - the brightest part of an object where the light is directly centered or pointed at
Light/Mid Tone - this is the gradient between the highlight going towards the outskirts of the shadow edge.
Shadow Edge - usually the darkest point of where the least amount of light touches the object
Middle Dark Tone - mid tones in between the reflected light and shadow edge
Reflected Light - objects will absorb light bouncing off the surface behind them, so the bottom/side will sometimes have tones inbetween the dark/light midtones

Shadow on Surfaces
Umbra - the darkest part of the shadow cast under the object
Penumbra - think of it as the midtone shadow layer on the surface
Antumbra - typically the lightest part of the shadow.

Requirements
1. You must use 3 or more different types of shading for the challenge.
2. The piece must contain both high contrast and low contrast, these features don't have to be side by side, anywhere on the challenge piece is fine.

3. The ceiling entity must have a shadow cast on the wall/ceiling.

Disclaimer: If you aren't a cat person, make a ceiling animal of your choice. I get not everybody is into cats. Colors will also be delved on more in a future challenge, for newer people, just focus on black, white, and the greys if you aren't comfortable with using color.

For The Experienced
Feel free to use the medium of your choice, so long as it adheres to the general concept of the challenge
Bonus points if you make duality ceiling demons/cats; one good and one bad or some kind of paired delinquent entities.

Misc
This challenge was inspired by a suggestion made by @Lawltism2

Regarding the current theme, I'd like to share a snippet of a piece I've done in the past but haven't shared anywhere before except for the fact that it's from a bigger drawing made for last year's Secret Santa; the person who got it never shared it publicly, unfortunately.

Not a submission, just sharing something topical given the opportunity :)

This one seems familiar! Yeah, a shame they didn't post it. It was such a great present!

Reactions: Double Taps
I like it quite a bit. The colors really pop. The line work is clean and precise which makes me think of an entry in a beastiary. I also like the posture, it gives off a menacing vibe similar to an attacking raptor. In short I think it kicks ass.

As an aside it would be hilarious if there was a Kiwi Farms bestiary for all of the different lolcows and notable farmers. Maybe toss in some goofy stat blocks.

I'm still hopelessly behind so here's my flag/coat of arms.
KKK Banner Challenge.webp
I would have finished sooner but I decided to scrap the initial figure/kiwi in favour of using my irl posing figurine as a reference (it's an anime model so more twink-shaped than the original buff guy I wanted to do). I know Josh loves Sisyphus but I've always liked Atlas more as a concept. I've included just the sketch too in case anyone wanted a closer look (he gets a bit lost in all the red).
