I dunno, that sounds pretty reasonable to me. I've seen people trying to sell soom heads in those sizes for as high as $250.
That's not a good price if you're just doing it to mess with people

I know this thread is old, but I wanted to ask some questions. I'm interested in starting small with the bjd hobby. I want to start with monster high dolls since they seem easier to customize and erase if I mess up somewhere. Are there any active communities that help people get started?

Monster Highs are technically hinge-jointed, not ball-jointed: HOWEVER, they'd be great to practice your face-painting and sewing skills on! Since they're smaller than most bjds, you'll get great skills learning to do faceups in them! :)

Check out Asenva's channel. She has a lot of good advice and vids for beginners.

Monster High isn't considered (weeaboo) BJD as they have hinge joints, but their community is large and overlaps due to the availability and customization.

Ninja'd.

Also, now's a good time to get cheap MH dolls. Wal-Mart is selling very basic ones for Easter for 5$-10$.

@Sailor_Jupiter Ah. I thought since they were similar that they would be called the same thing. Silly, I know.

@HickoryDickory I'll check her out when the lights and the internet come back on. I'll also scope out the town's Wal-Mart to see if they have any. Does the sale cover Ever After High dolls as well?

I checked earlier today and the Easter ones are 5$. They never had Ever After ones, only MH and Barbie's. They were in with the Easter PDQ's and not in the toy section. (Your store may vary tho)

I'm a big fucking dingus and I didn't know this thread existed until now.

I have a few favorite companies--I like Soom, though I wish their jointing system was a lot easier. Fairyland is nice as well. One of my favorite smaller companies is Merry Doll Round, and I recently got a Dango in the mail.

I'm about to order my first (and probably only) bjd. It's just a resinsoul but RS seems to have beautiful, high quality dolls and I don't care about the elitism. They have great customer service and apparently usually sand off seams, which is more than some bigger companies can say according to the people I follow. I started off doing faceups, wigs and outfits for MH/EAH dolls a while back and I'm going to continue to do that even after I get her. I'll be doing the wig, faceup and body blushing etc myself.

She's going to be 60cm. I wanted her to be a bit smaller, like 55 or 58 since the character is quite petite but I just preferred the Sophia 60cm sculpt to the Dai 58cm sculpt I was considering.

So that's pretty fun. There's maybe one other character I have who I'd consider putting into bjd form but he'd be expensive because he'd have to be about 70cm to be in proportion with the doll I'm buying now (they're from the same story so I'd want them to be proportionate). I can't really justify spending that much on a doll, especially since he's a very unremarkable looking character (no crazy hair or outfits like the character I'm getting wears) except for his massive collection of back tattoos, which I'd have to hire an artist to do because I'm not that good yet.

On the issue of recasts I don't care one way or the other if people own them. I do think it's awful when they recast a small company's dolls that have hundreds of hours of work put into them but I don't care if they recast old dolls from larger companies that are overpriced on the resale market anyway. If someone had a recast and admitted it I wouldn't judge them, I judge the recasters themselves but it really is an insanely elitist hobby. I ruled it out for the longest time before discovering companies like resinsoul exist and are 'affordable'.

You'll probably be happy with the RS doll. I have a 1/4 Ju and Sprite. (Bobobie head on RS body) I think some think of them as poor quality is because they're sometimes smoother and a bit more plastic-y looking instead of having a tooth and matte finish. -- Which is fixed with Mr. Super Clear.

I wouldn't care what anyone else considers a "good" doll to be elitist. Tbh, I prefer some of my cheaper dolls to my Volks.

Speaking of Mr. Super Clear, I bought some for my friend and I to use after we do our first Pullip customs, but she's concerned it will yellow over time. Should we be worried?

MSC doesn't yellow and has a UV version to prevent it. You might be mixing the yellowing idea with Dullcote.

Thank you both, I really appreciate it. Wanted to be sure before we broke ground on those MIO kits.

Since I already do faceups I have MSC ready to go. Just got a new can last week. It honestly gives even Monster High dolls a nice finish.

I know RS is considered a low-end/starter brand but I feel like that's mostly elitism. Plenty of people dive headfirst into mid-tier dolls because they're afraid of being judged because they bought from lower priced stores.
Sure, the photos on the site aren't all that good but I keep reading over and over that the store needs to change them because they don't do the dolls any justice. I googled all the dolls I was considering to see what they looked like with different face-up.

I've read that MSC is okay for the initial sealing of the doll, but I'm not sure if I should use something else as well. Any advice from doll owners?

I don't have my dolls body blushed and don't care about yellowing, so... (The greening and poor sanding of one of my dolls ticked me off tho)

MSC should be fine by itself. Over a few years it would be a good idea to remove it and re-apply a fresh coating. I did this last year with a 12-ish year old head and it's amazing how much dirt and ick a sealant can protect parts from. :sonichu:

The stigma against cheaper dolls is so undeserved. I got a 'cheap' doll as my first and I couldn' t be any happier about it. The only thing I could criticize is that the resin is pretty shiny and it doesn' t pose super smoothly but I could probably fix that with MSC and restringing/sueding.
Anyways, Gratulations for getting your first doll!
