Honestly I'm suprised the Chinese aren't getting into forking X11. Wayland is more or less seen as piece of shit since Kylin uses UKUI (MATE upstream with Qt).

OTOH they use systemd so... Using SMF is probably a better solution than the shit known as systemd.

A successor fork to Xorg has always seemed inevitable considering how Red Hat has gatekept the Xorg project, discouraging contributions and spreading FUD with such desperation that they're actively misleading people. Eventually someone is going to want to make meaningful changes and Red Hat will drag their heels on it. This is exactly what happened. No culture war needed.

For this reason I feel XLibre has the best chance of thriving compared to primarily culture-war based forks like Redot (which I was very critical of) and Sneedacity (which was kinda just a meme). Unlike in these previous instances, there is a need and there is someone with relevant codebase experience heading it up.

I won't be moving over, it needs some more time to cook. Plus from what I can tell nvidia drivers might not be working due to ABI changes. Obviously this is a non-starter that must be resolved. Adults use NVIDIA cards, I'm sorry.

That's indeed very telling language. If wayland was so great, X11 wouldn't need to be "killed" but would die of "natural causes" because people would naturally stop dealing with it to move on to wayland-based solutions. If your thing is better than the other thing, you don't need to force/shame/blackmail/pressure people to use it. I've been using Linux for 20+ years at this point and was always willing to switch it up when the newer solution was better. For example, the moment wireguard came along I dropped openvpn as if it never existed.

I remember when two of the biggest arguments for wayland from that camp were "lower latency" and "tearfree". Tearing has since been resolved in X for any major GPU (if you pull the master) and wayland has *worse* latency than X. (Funny thing, the Xwayland cludge actually has the tearfree fix for modesetting applied. There was just no release with it for X11)

Can you even copy&paste now without hacks? There isn't even a standard way to repogram keys or add additional resolutions. Wayland is mostly "feature-free" and the freedesktop/foot person will tell you even smugly that this is by design. What a shitty design. They want to "kill off" something well working in favor of something that is a comparable pain in the ass to use and are surprised and infuriated that people don't applaud them. Does that lead them to change their course and offer something better? No, they just double down in the smugness and passive-aggressive departments.

The whole wayland thing just turned into a bikeshedding exercise of a group of developers huffing their own farts and now their egos and sunk cost fallacy prevent them to do anything about it. Lot's of shitware like that in linux userspace nowadays and the common denominator is often Red Hat.

In a frankly baffling twist AntiX has absolutely no formal CoC at all, while even stuff like Alpine Linux does.

We talked here about this being a corpo push, etc., but I also wonder how much of that is just hubris. There is little glory in just maintaining X11. Create something new, and oh boy, suddenly you are someone.

Theses definitely glory on forking X11, cleaning it up, and making it far superior to Wayland when the controlling devs said it couldn't be done.

For more hilarity, Leah (Francis) Rowe of Libreboot is having some cognitive dissonance about XLibre vs RedHat and has taken to purging Libreboot documentation of "Orwellian language" (archive) referencing phrases like "the community" (posted as full image because thumbnail quality makes it illegible, jannies don't crucify me pl0x):

Pretty good stuff. Been also sperging a bit on mastodon (archive) about the current XLibre sitch. This comes directly after he phonebooked reported a known pedophile troon called Mooch to the feds with some pretty compelling evidence to boot. So close to being based but held back by muh nazis, unforch.

I'm curious to see if he has to post a correction in this case as well: The fact that with all his collected research about Mozilla, Red Hat etc. he only found one person in Big Tech who may be a Jew (or German - he wasn't sure about that) does sound peculiar.

Got home and started to watch. To find out it was clickbait, the video was about how "there are no Jews in Big Tech".
Interestingly, only 1750 views in three hours. Either he was put in a low priority pool or... he just has less than 100k subscribers (aka nobody).
