There's no threat of physical harm to either of them, but on the other hand I don't think Canada would extradite someone back to the United States over a relatively small civil judgment (or even a contempt of court charge) where the targets aren't wealthy. We have a similar treaty with the UK but we routinely tell UK judgment holders (in defamation cases) to get fucked.

Canada does not enforce our border or immigration laws at all. Our official government policy for illegal immigration and people overstaying their visas is "they'll leave voluntarily." We literally let people who slaughter bus-fulls of children because they don't know how to drive walk with a slap on the wrist because a conviction might get them deported.

ETA: That said, I hope his visa does expire so that the anxiety from immigration officers that will never show up -- coupled with an Edmonton winter -- drives him completely insane.
