I actually took a cursory glance at the reviews before this drama hit a feverpitch and the game was already mixed, apparently its not as good as the first one, people dislike the lack of modding support, and it still has this wierd middle ground of not really pleasing meleefags or newbies who want to get into a melee-esque game. It didnt seem like it was doing too hot in the first place

Up until recently, the "viable business plan" to get people to rebuy your software was to add new features or fixes that would make people actually want to upgrade to the new version. The new way you're describing is just to turn off the software and force them to buy it. Remember when you just bought photoshop once and had it forever, and if they added something cool you'd buy the newer version? Did nobody make any money before they discovered they could destroy your software and get away with it?
