He had family members already in media creation(I believe it was his cousin that originally ran a car channel called donut media, he's now doing his own thing but still cars) so he got himself some early connections, was decent at some games without looking like a normal gamer troglodyte(I think he was a smash player at some point?), and immediately re-invested his early income into collaborations with other people(including even royalty free music production for streamers to use, which of course got him in touch with more people), business ventures(offbrand games publishing with mald, moist esports with fellow milquetoast moistcritikal), podcasts(had the CEO of youtube on once), game tournaments, and so on to promote the shit out of himself with a lot of networking. He even got himself involved with a bunch of youtube people in japan and periodically goes over there, and did some motorcycle travel stream with that michael reeve guy a few months ago. Basically, lots of networking while being generally inoffensive and maintaining a hustle constantly.

I've skimmed a decent amount of this guy's lore, but from what I can gather none of this is even that big of a deal. Maldy is just too narcissistic to ever admit wrongdoing no matter how small the stakes are, and this has piled up into a public lashing over something people actually care about.

Legit, he could have just apologized for the WoW raid, but instead chose to do literally anything but accept that he was in the wrong. It's not even a big deal to be a bad teammate in a video game, but he handled it so poorly that it makes him look even worse than it should.

What indie developers are even making big live service games anyways? I may not be technical enough to fully understand the ramifications of what the post is saying, however, the one section about cheat engine is moot. Mald has talked at length about how he wants his game to be "hackable" and wouldn't want to hide player stats and I remember reading somewhere that he intentionally made the save file easily editable.
Wasn't the achievements anti-cheat thing for his previous game Champions of Breakfast?

I left AAA in 2016 because I fucking hate how the industry is now and prefer indie entirely. I don't like Blizzard or I would have stayed working there. That's why I quit. That's the entire point. Fuck AAA and what many studios have turned games into.

Path of Exile before getting bought up by tencent was indie with microtransactions, but it's also f2p so they've got to have a revenue stream from something. There's probably some other f2p games out there with mtx, but again if they're actually f2p that shouldn't be a big deal.

But indie games you actually have to pay for? The only one that comes to mind is Vampire Survivors, and that's some $3-$4 DLC packs that include a bunch of characters, a level or two, new enemies, pile of weapons, etc and considering the cost of the game and the volume of content in those DLC packs compared to the base game, they're more like paid expansions rather than normal trinket or convenience mtx bullshit.

And yeah, I know. I managed to come up with 2, one of which whored themselves out to a chinese publisher later and the other is debatable as it's transactions are generally far more than the average MTX even considering how simplistic the game is. I'm not saying it isn't a rarity, but it does happen.

I'm almost convinced he isn't a gamer in the sense that there are things he genuinely likes; and more along the lines of he does things that can be seen as socially acceptable.

While I'll admit I haven't seen much of him, he doesn't seem to play a wide breadth of games; mainly MMO or stuff he has friends or other connections to.

Meanwhile I remember a lot of games losing their online when GameSpy went under. I'm also sure there are plenty of other people who can think of games they enjoyed but otherwise can't now. There's also the curious case of Armored Core V where like 85% of the content required a connection to their servers. Sure you can still play it, but it's only 13 missions and you can't even get all the parts, because when I say everything was attached to the online, I mean EVERYTHING was attached to the online.

But Mald, all he seems to play is online shit, and his brain doesn't register what would happen if a company flipped the switch.

From what i've seen I agree. Even beyond "what's hot", the only things i've seen him play are things where he can be carried, or things where he can improve his image because the game is heckin hard or something ( cheating in animal well).
