This is something that Nick has alluded to multiple times in his typical vague and faggy melodramatic way. I think the argument he's trying to make is that the Headmistress simply passed along statements and concerns expressed to her by other teachers/parents etc. rather than basing it on her own observations, therefore creating (in Nick's mind) a "hearsay" issue.
