There's been so much ink spilled on WoW, Second Life, VRChat, etc in books, the media, academia, etc. SS13 is spared because it's so niche. I wonder what other things set it apart. An obvious one is that, unlike the other games I listed, there are basically no women (female) that play. They make up a decent plurality of the other three. You could get a good few Substack articles out of this.

All of these things are wildly different from each other, though.
WoW attracts MMORPG players who are basically either ERP addicts or people who used to play EverQuest before WoW killed it, but it's normie accessible and not infested and ruined.
SecondLife attracts terminally online users, mostly gooners above the age of 30, and pretty much requires autism to make it past the learning cliff, it is also not a game with gameplay but you can play games on it (board games, cards, scrabble).
VRChat is so easy to use 9 year olds are on there right now being groomed by the type of person who never outgrew their emo phase, it also does not exactly have "gameplay" but there are games within it that involve minor physical activity (among us, freeze tag, etc)

SS13 is unique among online games where one can roleplay:
1) You have to be autistic and permanently online to even know about it.
2) You most likely already enjoy tileset based games if you're willing to even try it. (Dwarf Fortress, Cataclysm DDA)
3) You have to be willing to play games where losing is !!FUN!! (see previous)
4) You have to have a very high IQ to understand-- any of the game systems, including how to even use your hands and talk.

Whether you play it for roleplay, gameplay or lulz, SS13 has a stranglehold over the multiplayer live-action tile-based game niche. It's a genre establishing game, which I'd compare to how Doom and Quake set the standard for games of those kinds forever. There's a reason its systems have been so widely adapted to so many different concepts, but there's also a reason that only around 50,000 people in general even know about it or care. It is the only thing of its kind, and for that reason, it attracts a very specific genre of person (self included). SS14 can only ape its success while adding little.

I'm going to be real with you, I have assumed for years the ss13 reddit was compromised by mods who have ties to various servers specifically to censor discontent about whatever objective faggotry is going on inside said communities, that and impotent tranny janny tyranny which is ubiquitous on Reddit adding another layer to make discussion about the goings on in the community just even more faggy.
Thinking about it the word compromised is a bit strong, part in parcel is better to describe the subreddits jannies.
One of the key benefits of this well populated thread is to document all the horse shit that goes on in ss13 that is normally suppressed in the usual discussion spots, iirc the banning of random people who were alleged to play riveria station (in a doctored screen cap) is unknown to most people I've talked to about.
 
The SS13 reddit used to be run by people who were less affiliated with certain cliques, that is why it was easier to spread information about the issues on certain servers.

The subreddit is run by these people.

Since ZeWaka is the main moderator of this subreddit, there's a benefit of observing his relationship with different servers and see if they line up.

OP was requesting for the ERP servers to get a hub of their own, which did not bode well as furfags generally feel entitled to proudly and shamelessly spread their fetish amongst the view range of regular people.

I actually started checking on Reddit just few months ago, I think. Whole ocean of bullshittery just managed to slip past me as I wasn't aware of this part of the internet subculture.

Pedos were never a surprise, though, PKS was ousted on Animus Station first and I never though it would spiral out into getting tied with overall Reddit-sphere. Shit's sad.

I remember there being almost daily (weekly) drama on the ss13 subreddit back in 2014/2015. This was a year when the FFF was active, BestRp, Apollo, Aurora, bay (lmao) were all imploding to a degreee at the same time. Literally a post a day or two and it would get swept.

Second major wave was when Orange Hitler won the election. Self explanitory given how that shit caused GG.

Third wave was ssethtide ish ? (2019-2020). Wasn't around then. I include the ERP grooming allegations later on since those were concurrent.

BestRP died in 2015 (maybe 16?). I know Baystation had a melty then with Xales/Mloc (I think) getting elected in 2015 as someone who hadn't played for 5 years as headmin. Mord got yeeted as an admin for being a zerofun badmin (except when they played ofc)
