Isn't the code for Undertale also a fucking mess? I just don't understand choosing GMS2 for anything other than a beginner project. I think this dip shit saw the easy 'console support' and had dreams of his game blowing up and being released on the Switch 2.
RPGs don't really need clean code, they live off dialogue, a bunch of switches, and maybe combat mechanics if applicable. Heartbound's code is still bad for this standard of course, as amply explained elsewhere.

There's little reason to not use rpg maker for your game if it can be made in rpg maker, it's just going to save you time when trying to make your game. Using a game engine made for this sort of thing just makes it worse that he is taking so long and trying to wizard hacker improve the engine.

I mark the beginning of the Dark Age of Gaming/end of the Golden Era at the precise moment Potato Ken shat out his daughter simulator Bioshock Infinite and the entire gaming press cabal entered a new phase of slobbing his knob over it - and none of the reasons they were doing so were because of how "fun" it was to play.

"This game heckin' fights racism* and starts new dialogs!"

* The game does not have the balls to have a single utterance of NIGGER and shows such an aversion to depicting any kind of actual racial conflict take place that it folds back in on itself and makes the player wonder what the darkies were complaining about
