VPNs that you haven't made yourself is already a security risk. The "Public WiFi" bullshit is indeed stupid, the S in HTTPS stands for Secure, your data is encrypted. If you really think a haxorman is at your local Starbucks, checking whether you are on public WiFi every single day you visit, you are paranoid. Maybe at a public airport, or other areas with shitloads of people, then maybe, don't use it, but there's no reason not to.

For the average VPN user, listen up. A commercial VPN is only useful for hiding your torrenting from your ISP, occasionally accessing content not available in your country (increasingly unlikely to succeed as eg. Netflix bans VPN servers) or if you live in a third world shit hole with corrupt ISPs that block certain traffic and shit. A VPN you set up yourself has lots of uses, like accessing a work network remotely or as I have done accessing your homelab/NAS remotely.
Don't make fun of me too hard, but I have a question about this, building your own VPN would still make you the owner of the VPN endpoint, wouldn't it? So how does this help with privacy at all? (I'm retarded)
I'm no expert but....assuming you were a network admin with access to multiple servers, I could see it. Like say you owned a data repository with servers in new york, texas, california, london, mumbai, and dheli. You could probably funnel traffic through them for basically the same effect.

Not to mention that if you're security minded, you really shouldn't be doing sensitive things in a public environment in general. There's no VPN that can save you from someone just looking over your damn shoulder. Set a day of the week to do your normal banking and shit from home, and you've got nothing to worry about.
