How bad is it?
It's not any more woke than the first, but in terms of content it really shows it was intended as DLC and not as a full release. The map is maybe 1/4th the size, all monsters behave the same (bite attack), the player character speaks and a lot, there's weird retcons about the lore from the original, the temperature mechanic is useless, the land biome is boring, the story is boring.

Below Zero taught me that the devs didn't have a clue about what made the first so compelling.
BZ wasn't made by the team behind the first Subnautica. But speaking of them, back when they were in the prototype/alpha phase, the lead dev came up with the idea of "5 minutes of fun", where the first prototype only had to be fun for five minutes. After that, make it fun for 10 minutes, then 20 and so on. They really focused on gameplay and feedback.

based if true
Its looking more the like the South Koreans publishers are purposely trying to screw them out of a $250 bonus.

The sequel’s delay to 2026 was against the wishes of the studio’s former leadership, according to the people. The $250 million bonus was due to kick in if Unknown Worlds hit certain revenue targets by the end of 2025, according to the purchase agreement, which was reviewed by Bloomberg. By delaying Subnautica 2 into next year, the company is unlikely to hit those targets and therefore the employees may not be eligible for the payout, the people said.

It is very bad, they did go full woke with BZ.

1. Horrible storytelling, horrible dialogue. It's like social justice wokery on steroids.

2. Text to speech PDA voice has an Indian accent for no reason what so ever, makes no sense, only reason would be to "decolonise" the PDA

3. Three main human characters of the story are perfect mary sue black women with no faults.

4. PDA drivel only had homosexual romances, it adds nothing more than "look! we are so inclusive!". Why not invest money on something interesting like a new biome instead of this meaningless chatter for real world approval.

5. Kind of a continuation of point 2, main character is supposed to be a knowledgeable xenobiologist yet behaves like a "baddass" tween, at no point will you believe this Political Correct character to be a scientist, if you was not told so beforehand.

That irked me a lot in Starfield. Everyone including the powerful characters had  that attitude.

I'm tempted to play it anyway just to explore more environments for at least a little while. The gameplay still looks fun, I'll have to see if I can handle the writing and the reduced content...

I dunno how they're going to make the sequel work. Part of the cham of the original was the sense of mystery and discovery, exploring an unknown planet full of alien life, then stumbling your way onto ancient alien ruins, discovering said ruins were actually functional, and then pushing deeper and deeper down into the depths.

Do the devs even have it in them to create an equally compelling premise/narrative, or will they just shit out a rehash of the first game with slightly improved graphics?

After what we have seen what they did with BZ and S2, its clear they have no understanding of why people liked their first game.

BZ was such a tremendous disappointment, it lacked that spark from the original.

In S1, there was always something pushing you to go deeper, be it resources, plot or just the want of exploration. That urge to keep going deeper was always counterbalanced by the trepidation of doing so. Between the sound design, terrain and the the general fear of the unknown the devs were great at adding tension to exploration.

The conflicting feelings were perfect, it made S1 feel like a horror game at times.

BR had none of that. Complaints over the plot and characters aside, it just didn’t understand that central draw of the first game.

I don't know why anyone is surprised by this since they virtue-signaled the fact that they made a game with no guns because they wanted to "vote towards a world with less guns" all the way back in 2016.

I haven't read all the comments here, but I'll chime in here, as I'm the main reason we don't have violent/weapons in the game.

Subnautica was being birthed right around the time of the Sandy Hook shooting. This was a particularly nasty shooting, although many people don't realize America has school shootings every day. Every. Single. Day.

(5/8/16 UPDATE: I meant to say "mass" shootings, not "school" shootings: http://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shooting and http://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shootings/2015)

Yet, for reasons I cannot understand, our people and the corporations that influence our country want to continue making it easy for people to get, carry and use pistols, semi-automatic and fully-automatic weapons.

I've never believed that video game violence creates more real-world violence. But I couldn't just sit by and "add more guns" to the world either.

So Subnautica is one vote towards a world with less guns. A reminder that there is another way forward. One where we use non-violent and more creative solutions to solve our problems. One where we are not at the top of the food chain.

the areas where there's no light + leviathans are fuckin terrifying, especially when you have to leave the seamoth to do stuff, i had to set up some infrastructure and exterminate the damn things cuz i was too scared to throughly explore down there otherwise

said infrastructure was a sturdy base, with a lot of light fixtures, a shitton of supplies, and 2 moonpools with seamoths equipped with 3 torpedo tubes and 1 depth upgrade mk3 (or was it a mk2, i forgot tbh)

one of the torp modules was loaded with 2 vortex and 4 gas, and the rest were loaded with 6 gas torps

i fire 1 vortex torp, then if it hits, i fire as many gas torps as i can, follow up by the 2nd vortex torp to keep it pinned in place for longer

if the foul beast survives, i leave the sub, fire a fully-charged stasis rifle blast, and reload the torpedo tubes (i have 30sec to reload and repeat)

if it survives after i burned through so many torps, my contingency plan was to seaglide away (as it would spot the seamoth easily), get to the second seamoth, and finish the job

with 185 damage per gas torpedo, i need 44 of em to down a ghost leviathan, each salvo has 16 gas and 2 vortex torps, and i fit as many of the remaining torps as i could in my inventory (i placed all of my usual tools and supplies except the stasis rifle back in the base)

Sounds like an epic moment, you should have filmed the whole take down.

Maybe it's just me, but I felt even the original Subnautica didn't really live up to its promises. The gameplay with the scanner, base-building and eggs seemed to set up a promise where learning and experimentation would be important. But by the end it turns out it's just generic exploration, and the base-building has no significant purpose (beyond one module to put stuff in). I'd say it was great up to the midpoint where the facade breaks.

Subnautica 2 revealed to be A DEI DISASTER developer studio UW EMBRACES ESG

Can you blame them for doing this after what these woke developers did?.. i dont, i call it cutting losses.
First time reading one of SmashJT's articles, he really writes same as he talks in his videos - utter spergery, it's almost impressive
A bit hard to read, though.

I've known since the start that UW was pozzed, after Cleveland came out with his anti-gun nonsense and indicating he fully embraces leftist ideology, which was cemented after they fired Polish composer over a tweet going against said ideology.
Nevertheless, the game was good, it stood out in the deluge of survival slop. Because a lot of people from all over the world who weren't retarded were also involved, like our based Polish brother Simon Chylinski.

After Below Zero [Expectations], I stopped giving a fuck about the studio, so these news were at most amusing. But as much as I hate DEI/ESG, this is clearly some bullshit. I hope American court fucks gooks into oblivion over this. Unless they were retarded enough to sign a contract that somehow makes this legal, at that point they only have themselves to blame.
