I partly agree with both sentiments here. People in this thread are calling him a "pedo" when he himself was underage when the crimes happened. Also, the reason we have a separate system for juvenile crimes is because children are considered less culpable. However, his offenses are extremely serious, and if he was this sexually violent at 12 to 15, I for one would not trust him near any vulnerable person ever again.

Well there are programs that help reintegrate ex-cons by matching them to open jobs. So yeah a company like Canonical might well do this as a cost-cutting measure. Tech salaries are still high, and a sex offender could be paid less. The position may be almost entirely remote work / WFH, so there is little liability risk from putting other employees in danger. I've stopped using Ubuntu ever since they put Amazon ads into the search bar. It was good as a transitional distro for learning Linux (I had been a windows luser from 95 to 7, 8 was so bad it made me switch). While I wouldn't recommend it any more, I'd pick something less pozzed. A luser that wants something that "just werks" needs a basic entry distro, especially if they're coming from windows or macos. They can slowly start to learn how to use the shell to do basic stuff, then more advanced stuff. Once they hit the limitations of what Ubuntu can give them, they can switch to a different distro if they want to.

It's obvious the defacing of the XLibre wiki article is the real problem here. If you separate the two - the person's personal life (his past, his convictions and personal ideologies) from their professional life (what they do and say in their professional roles, whether they're employees or freelancers working on FOSS projects) you have to judge the person based on their professional conduct first. While you may have a personal problem with them being a convicted pedo (so do I) that's not what directly affects me or the FOSS community. Him being a woke cultist that defaced a wiki of a project that I could use and that could benefit me personally, does directly affect me. Too often I see purity spiralling on the right that mirrors purity spiralling on the left (obviously with diametrically opposed viewpoints), which leads them to get stuck on a thing about the person that they don't like that isn't directly related to the thing that the person did that affected the community and them, so that they often forget what the issue was in the first place, and start sounding like religious fanatics. Like the far left sounds like nutjobs when they shout "He's a nazi" the right will often fall into shouting "xer is a pedo faggot tranny" and forget to address the core issue.

In short, he was 12-15 when he was doing the abuse, but, the abuse was so bad, and because his parents not only knew about it but didn't punish him for it, his sisters reported him to authorities when he was 26 because they heard he and his wife were considering having children.

If he hasn't Canonical's response should have been something like: yes, this guy was convicted of sexual assault when he was still a minor, but he had gone through his entire adult life without re-offending, and we thought, especially with his skill set, he deserved a second chance.

That said, his behavior in defacing the XLibre github, however minor, his hyper-progressive viewpoints, and his parrot-like physiogamy, lead me to believe he is almost certainly still a danger to children, and I would not be surprised if he ends up in a predator catcher video in the next few years.

Pure speculation, but I doubt he believes he has anything to hide. He told Canonical he was a sex offender before they hired him (which, tbf, could just be responsibly informing potential employers so they aren't blindsided) and he was very candid with the police, not only about his sisters who accused him, but 3 other victims as well. Most of the people in his life have forgiven him for what he did to those kids, and he gave this statement to the police.

I have mostly dealt with this by putting it behind me and forgetting.

Also, it's common for people with things to hide to step into the limelight, and even accidentally reveal the things they're hiding. For example, look at the lolicon thread OP and you'll see that the guy who made the "uoh child erotic" meme was a famous eroge gacha game artist and accidentally posted that he used an infamous csam video as reference material.

Legally, he was convicted on two counts of "sexual battery upon a child under 12". But supposedly in the court documents it's mentioned that there were "thousands of assaults", ie. he was molesting his sisters on a daily basis for multiple years.

The broader issue here is in what to do with people like him.

You're doing society a disservice when you separate his "personal life" from his "professional life" without resolving the fact that he poses a threat first.
His existence is being supported by the company that hires him and through that he is being enabled to continue being a threat. So if he does something horrible, Canonical would be partially liable.

However, banning him from ever getting hired implies that he should be killed through starving to death, which is weird, wouldn't it make more sense just to euthanize him then? We basically offload that moral dilemma from the collective to hirers. And as we can see Canonical has made a decision.

Maybe the trve solution is to have people like him castrated? That's when separating his "personal life" from his "professional life" starts making more sense.
