Wayland would have been better had it not been effectively a GNOME project in its formative years. Today it mostly struggles due to GNOME developer meddling.
Wayland would have been better if it had a BDFL, and none of that retarded voting/power-grabbing by committee shit.
Ideally, in my opinion, everyone would have been better off using Arcan, but we didn't go with Arcan. So we are stuck with the wayland protocol.

Ubuntu largely fell off ever since they abandoned the desktop, even to this day I would call the default Ubuntu install largely broken(mostly a side effect of being based on that piece of shit Debian). Last good release IMO was 16.04 with Unity7.
I miss Unity7 and all the patches to GNOME/GTK it made to make it useful and usable.

Normally I'd wish they moved to KDE right after Unity but KDE at the time was completely broken and unusable. Maybe one day Unity8 will be great now that Mir was turned into a Wayland compositor.
My desktop uses Fedora and my laptop uses NixOS. Fedora I recommend for a just works but slightly more advanced distribution but it is also tied to RedHat Financially, NixOS is just a personal autism of mine, I do not recommend unless you want to do a lot of reading.

Honestly i use just modded versions of Ubuntu I'm more of a XFCE guy but i did tried out Fedora and it was pretty solid but i do agree 16.04 was the last good version.

Slackware is ok for being a newfangled distro. SLS is better though if you are a traditionalist.

Slackware is kino and used mostly by Unix greybeards (and myself ). Absolutely not haram.
OpenMandriva is a comfy Just Works distro, It does use systemd if you think that's important. But I use it on a few machines with absolutely no issues. The only real issue I have is that the package repositories are relatively small (only maintained by a few people) so you will probably be using Flatpaks a lot.
Devuan is basically just Debian but not systemd. So if you have used Debian before its basically the same thing.
