The fault here doesn't really lay with Canonical, or Debian. The real fault lays with* either the judge or the prosecutor.
The judge sentenced Jeremy to three years in state prison on each count of abuse, and ordered him to serve the sentences concurrently. He could be out on parole in two years. The judge also sentenced him to five years’ probation and said Jeremy would be designated a sex predator.

This is an absolutely ludicrous sentence for the years of abuse he subjected his 12y/o sister to. It's difficult to word this because i'm not trying to pander with an easily agreeable comment. Jeremy should be locked up for at least 30-40 years without parole. SA victims have to live with their abuse for ~60+ years - why should the abuser get to do a (sometimes much) smaller stint in prison and then walk free hiding behind the "i did my time" excuse? Especially when it's family related, why does the victim get put in a place where the following happens:
The two sisters would prove the only witnesses on their behalf. Over the next six hours, an aunt, an uncle, Jeremy’s wife, and his mother all testified on Jeremy’s behalf for a lighter sentence. They didn’t dispute his guilt, but they blamed a repressive upbringing and an abusive father.
Any sane person would think the family would rally around the victim and cast out the abuser but this isn't always the case. What a fucked up position to be in, being a child and going to court to relive the abuse just to get justice for yourself only for the parents & relatives to convince the court to give him a lenient punishment. How
morbid.
Aside from that, Canonical have fired him. Just because they fired him AFTER they started getting heat doesn't absolve them. They knew about his past and still hired him but also... they shouldn't have been able to hire him in the first place. So where does this leave jeremy?
Destined to get a job, get fired when people complain for the rest of his life? Maybe, probably; it would be the least of his demons. Can he live a normal life after something like that? Does anyone or should anyone care? I'm not trying to imply I do, it's just something interesting to think about. I feel like the simple answer "just have him executed by the state" is cheap, though morally I believe it to be correct.
I watch a lot of true crime and I like to try understand what makes people do things. It's fascinating but I am unable to understand people that commit crimes like this. Many things can end up in murder but what kind of person is the practicing pedophile? I think the easiest answer is that they're simply not human and the only real solution is that they don't deserve to live.
So why aren't sentences for pedophiles far more strict? Miss me with the globohomo protect-our-own nonsense.
It's probably to do with the "reform" part of sentencing. Maybe there's too much stock put in jeremy being able to change his course and become a contributing member of society. Then I scroll up a few posts and I see this:
It's all so tiresome. Thanks for reading my TED talk.
*the real fault lays with jeremy obviously.
