Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I know I'm years late to this specific topic, but can someone explain to me what's the point of the "bell" thing that every youtuber begs you click? Why would I need an extra redundant notification for uploads when they already show up in my subscriptions tab?
Most YouTube users are brainless NPCs that click on a video and only watch recommended videos after. They don't know they have a page for just their subscriptions so they need an alert when Mr. Beast uploads "I paid ONE MILLION homeless men to jerk off on my face!".

Has YouTube been blocking you from watching videos if you're not signed in for a while, or is that something new? Never remember seeing that issue before, personally.

Was actually on a site looking to buy movie tickets and when I clicked on the trailer that's the message I got.
Normal for me for quite a while now, i assumed it's due to using a VPN.
There's another detail that isn't mentioned enough, which is the fact that in Europe you can't get prepaid SIMs without a personal ID. This map is from 2018, so it might not be accurate.
True for Germany, you do a video call with some rube and have to show your ID, it's some bullshit. Girlfriend couldn't register with an EU-valid, non-german passport.

I'm guessing Youtube started a/b testing again. I get no videos on Youtube homepage. I only see shorts and community posts. The community posts are also big af almost always filling the whole screen like this.

The giant community posts struck me on Brave Android last night. They are ridiculously large, taking up easily 50% of the screen on the homepage interspersed with two video recommendations at a time. Some of the Community Posts are from channels I'm neither subscribed to nor ever heard of.

I actually liked the Community Posts functionality previously and partially separately used the OG YT app simply for some of the missing functionality on Brave like comment notifications, comment editing, sorting by New and Community Post highlights.

But the ads on the official app would also drive me back to YT via Brave browser within minutes.

I have all YT notifications turned off, but I always assumed the YT bell notifications were to annoy you with out of app mobile Push notifications or email notices everytime a creator on your list went live or uploaded anything.

I am noticing more and more videos with a "Members only" tag, what kind of jewry is this? Are people really paying 5€ to individual creators to watch shit? Every time i think the platform can't sink lower in my estimation i discover stuff like this. Are normgroids really this used to throwing their money at subscriptions and the like by now that it's viable for creators to gatekeep their content like that?

YT is trying to do the patreon / gumroad paywall method

This is why I also despise substack. I’m not paying to read your shitty essay

I've heard smaller creators give a reason before why they makes their livestream archives Members Only that wasn't for paypig reasons. But for the life of me I can't remember.

Perhaps preserving some archiving functionality without really keeping them public.

Or perhaps something to do with keeping their viewing metrics pure?

Making some videos harder to report or copyright strike?

Sounds like such a cop out no matter how its put. For me it looks like pure greediness, already got Adsense money, most likely a Patreon too and now they got another way to bleed the paypigs (who seem to be happy to throw their money around any way possible either way), sanctioned by YT themselves no less.

Thats happening even to GOOD youtubers like Mr Nightmare.

I get you gotta make a living, I do but you now have exclusive Members content, in video ads from the youtuber themselves and ads from YT itself.

This is actually sounding worse than cable TV

in video ads from the youtuber themselves
Totally forgot about those, it's crazy how many avenues of income there are now for the average YTer per video. I've been with someone who had a middling, ~30k subs, my native language channel pre Adpocalypse 1, i know how good the Adsense money alone was. Definitely good enough for me to question why i even went to work every day back then. Now with Patreon being the quasi standard and in-video sponsor ads these motherfuckers are raking it in as long as they are conforming to Youtube's rules.

I like when it's the Members Only version of the video I am currently watching.

A channel I watch (houston jones) started reuploading his deleted youtube videos as members only. So I don't know if maybe youtube is more lenient with member videos?
