Why does it never occur to Jake that people don't want to "clear the air" with him or repair their "friendship"? He just refuses to admit that he was never as important to those people as they clearly were to him.
Most people don't regard social media "friends" with whom they never catch up in real life as especially important and aren't going to be heartbroken when those "friendships" wane.

Don't underestimate just how far Jake fell over the past decade or so. He used to write about watching movies with friends IRL, having inside jokes and nicknames and catchphrases with them, things like that. You know, things that actual friends do. He got his column at RPGamer because he was friends with the people running it, and for some reason it seems like he actually had fans. He knew what socialization was at one point, he just forgot.
I really wonder if there's an interesting story behind it, or if he just drifted away from all his ties to the real world and went insane due to isolation.

I’d say it was the failure of his game that broke him.
Jake was the dude that didn’t grow up and become an adult. While all his old friends did things like got real jobs, got married, had children, bought houses, etc...Jake refused to do anything he didn’t want to (like a job to be independent) and remained dependent on mommy.
His friends moved, they didn’t have endless time for games and had less and less in common with Jake as they became adults and Jake regressed to a creepy man child.
Jake only wants to do what interest and pleases him - much like a child. So when that fabulous high paid gig to create/write about games didn’t materialize he didn’t try something else or make alternate plans to achieve his goal. He made one last stab at it by trying to create his own game. When that failed he just gave up, curled up in bed, let mommy take care of him and eventually decided he was a troon to rationalize why is life was a shit pile of fail instead of admitting it was his own choices and laziness.
Dude would have been a much happier person had he just manned up and taken any job and started to grow as a person and deal with expectations and responsibilities, but instead he just ran to his bedroom and had a pity party for a decade while his mom does the heavy lifting.

Sounds like “expert journalist” Jake “I spend weeks monitoring social media of game studios to see if I want to apply there” Alley is behind on the times.
It’s the only game he’s consistently played. Like 1% of his 800 games have more than a few hours played, Stellaris he had like 200 I think. And now he can’t even enjoy that.

There’s also the reactions of his friends. When you’re young, there’s always that guy who has had some “hard luck,” maybe losing his job or just generally having trouble getting it together, or having a plan that ends up failing. And at first you have sympathy for him because he had some bad luck and give him a hand or some support.
But then over the years you realize that he *keeps* having “bad luck” and that all your friends who have bad luck or have trouble with something *are always the same people*. So I can imagine that Jake’s IRL friends realzied he was a black hole of neediness and failure he needed his friends to help him with, and they ended up slowly drifting away from him.
Quite possibly with GG he figured this was a way to show he didn’t really NEED his old friends who were drifting away from him anyway, because he could make NEW friends. But then the pattern reasserted itself.

Anyway, I can only agree with what most people here have said. I think he probably had friends back in the day, perhaps still from his high school days when he was somewhat forced to socialize. Then he slowly drifted further and further into his current state of basement-dwelling NEET-dom. So he 1) has very few things to talk about with his old friends because they probably all moved on to having adult, 30-something lives and 2) he's making no RL new friends because he has no job or hobbies that require him to leave the house/get out of his comfort zone.
And I've said it before: I think he could still make a friend (online or IRL) but he just comes off as too self-absorbed, as someone who's only interested into unloading his emotional baggage onto his "friend" instead of having a meaningful, balanced, healthy relationship with another human being.
