I don't agree with the sentiment Chris is rolling in money. His monthly SSI is the low end of a days work for a 30 y/o of actual means. His 5k or so in ebay earnings is trivial in the grand scheme of things; a momentary high point in what is otherwise a sad existence. New car? Its still a used economy car. Sure it was a stupid purchase but I have never met somebody who would be impressed by the guy driving the used ford focus.
The focus of our authors complaints is what he sees as SSI abuse. The problem isn't with Chris its with a system that makes public assistance more acceptable by giving cash and EBT cards without really making recipients feel the sting of their situation. Adding bureaucracy to police borderline cases of fraud costs more than just handing people like the chandlers their pittance. In theory the net benefit should be positive with society not ending up with crime ridden slums like this gem 2 blocks from Mumbai's nicest neighborhood. If we want to settle the issue for good then my tax bill for the US, where I haven't lived for a decade, is more than Chris's tugboat. We can earmark all of my tax dollars to the CWCville fund and nobody else can feel like their money was wasted.
