I think we get a lot of bad chinese and indian talent coming in the pool because they're cheap and their motivation is to unlock a 100k job and live in america. In the west you have people who were exploring hobbies for a decade before they ever thought of work but we're starting to export hacker culture to places, Bangalore, Mumbai, Shenzhen, Shanghai so hopefully the quality will improve.

I'm very amused because the Benedictine Rule was created for monks who wanted to live a strict, ordered existence where they could consciously shut out the greater world so that their works and deeds would honor God and so that the labor of their hands would be untainted by pride and vanity.

It was intended to impress upon it's adherents the need for humility, industry, and obedience to an authority higher than oneself.

That all said, I can see why so many SJW types would REEEEE hard, that is anathema to their core principles even outside the Christian aspects.

I… I don't get it. Would some other project having a more traditional CoC have stopped SQLite from using this one? This is like saying "nothing says that more people should ride bicycles like someone going for a jog."

Spoiler: What's SQLite?

What might be especially triggering to these folks is that SQLite is one of the most widely-used pieces of software in the world, despite the fact that most normies probably haven't heard of it. It's a robust, well-tested, easily-embeddable database system with a very permissive license, so it's widely embedded into other pieces of software, including, almost certainly, the web browser you are reading this with right now.

If the religious bits bother you, just take out all of those lines, and you're still left with a pretty good document that basically says "be a good person."

Really hope the SQLite folks can hold strong and let the storm blow over without buckling. We shall see.

The thing about these Idiots reeeing is that most of them don't make any valuable contributions themselves. If you don't like how sqlite or the linux kernel project is run, fork it. Do it better - or make yourself important to the projects by adding something that is of high value. They can't. It comes down to the ol' "put up or shut up". When it gets to actually producing something worthwhile, all these "diversity consultants" are shit out of luck and the outrage about the Linux kernel getting that CoC from that tranny has shown them that the vast majority doesn't care for their brand of bullshit and won't support their witch hunts. Yeah, that's a good point. I think the lack of a hacker culture is really what's limiting. I've worked with talented Indians (in India) and untalented ones. But regardless of which group they fall in, they've always had one thing in common: they didn't really like programming as a hobby, it was just something they did for a job.

People can become good programmers even if they don't enjoy programming as a hobby. But I think it's an uphill battle.

I think it's literally an "outrage meme". Random people become offended for whatever reason and hope to be repeated or rephrased with similar opinions. The goal is to become viral, then outrage mob can bully the target into capitulation and compliance while inflicting some amount of damage as a warning to other dissenters. An individual is easy to ignore but the mob can be crushing, especially when they start tagging in financial sponsors or parent companies and the like.
