divorce immesurably complicates life especially with kids. i don't blame women at all for trying to "stick it out" and be "open-minded" at first about their hubby "coming out". the prospect of being a single mother is scary enough, but doing so for not supporting your husband's identity? that has to feel like being between a hot rock and a hard place covered in shards of glass.

What's up with TERFs on this thread acting like everything is so hard for women? If being a single mother is so hard then why do women initiate divorce all of the time? I think that if this woman gets divorced, she might get alienated from her social circle, but she'll probably be fine as long as she can get child support and access to her ex's assets.

Reasons for the most recent three divorces by single moms that I happen to know (obviously not a representative sample):

1 - He cheated on her repeatedly and gave her an STD that landed her in the hospital with PID. To pay for his affairs he ran up huge debts on a credit card she didn't know about and after she too got hammered by debt collectors as a result, he drained their joint accounts not just to pay off the card but to punish her by pocketing money she'd contributed to the account for years as rainy day savings and the kids' college funds.

2 - He intimidated her constantly and knocked her around to the point where her brother intervened and broke the guy's arm so that he couldn't mess with her while she moved out. Three days later, hubby showed up with his big boy gun and his previously unknown girlfriend to shoot the windows out of the house where the woman and the kids were staying. She got a protective order and when she walked back to her car parked near the courthouse found the windshield had been shot out. Then he wanted to make up with her and move into wherever she was hiding out with the kids because he was lonely.

3 - He physically abused the kids and fantasized aloud to her about fucking their little daughter. He's demanding sole custody and is paying nothing toward the kids' food, housing, or medical care while the divorce proceedings are under way because, he says, he's not getting anything for his money.

So one reason women decide to go it alone is that a surprising number of guys that other guys think are okay are actually absolute shits. Just sayin.

This site is one you can use that supposedly detect your gender based on your writing. I can't say 100% how accurate it would be, but plugging in something I wrote got me an accurate result. YMMV.

Yeah, I read it before using it, I'm just not sure of the exact things it picks up on. I think there may be something to it, but generally, people are too varied in their styles and influenced by too many factors to make an accurate prediction.

Can confirm. One of my friends is going through a divorce (or is about to be). Her reason is that her husband is extremely abusive and used every trick in the abusers playbook to keep her around. I'm shocked she left at all. The reason he didn't do it, despite her having three kids (four including the one he impregnated her with to trap her) that he hated? He wanted the control. He did what he could to keep her around because she's an easy target.

Not really. Lawyers (usually) cost money. My friend is going to have a lot of money tanked into lawyer fees (she's seriously talking about taking him to court, and she's already got a lawyer she's talking to about an EPO), as is anyone going through a divorce with kids. In general, yeah, maybe the mother would be fine if she can get child support and her ex's assets. The problem is getting there. Not to mention it's not always cut and dry. Men skip out on child support. Sometimes there ARE no assets. Do you really think someone who is that high maintenance and also is begging his wife for money is going to have many assets for her?

Yeah, I plugged two of my other samples in (one was informal writing and the other was a formal paper for school) and it got them both wrong. There might be others out there. There usually is a pretty distinct difference between how men and women speak though and it may be easier to pick up on when it's an actual human and not a machine that's doing the detection.

Not really. Lawyers (usually) cost money. My friend is going to have a lot of money tanked into lawyer fees (she's seriously talking about taking him to court, and she's already got a lawyer she's talking to about an EPO), as is anyone going through a divorce with kids. In general, yeah, maybe the mother would be fine if she can get child support and her ex's assets. The problem is getting there. Not to mention it's not always cut and dry. Judging by her Reddit history, I'd say pretty severe social anxiety and depression, possibly been sexually abused before. GI issues too. The transtrending is another way to escape the bad feeling regarding her body, which she associates with bad feelings. So yeah, maladaptive coming mechanism. She doesn't want to be a man, she wants to not be a woman.

Reddit isn't doing her any favors in this regard, mostly because it teachers her to hold onto her feelings of victimization and never let them go, so she's constantly replaying it in her head day after day. Rumination is one of the most psychologically unhealthy things you can do.

It's a powertrip, which isn't to say that she's necessarily a vindictive asshole. She's more likely a sadsack asshole.

I did this kind of shit now and then when I was dealing with depression and anxiety. I'd put various arbitrary expectations on people and then saw their noncompliance to those expectations as proof that no one gave a shit about me, and this would drive me into a downward spiral of external loathing and self-loathing. Fortunately, most of this didn't translate to bad behavior in public, unlike your average transtrender.

Not signaling that she identifies as a man is part of the game: Set up people to fail you, and use their failure to double down on wallowing in your mental illness.

This is one reason why I'm torn on pronoun usage. I'm not interested in affirming these people, but calling them by their real pronouns in their presence feeds their martyr complex, which is at least as harmful to them in the long run as playing pretend.

It's been long enough, I don't remember most specifics, but one thing that I do remember was getting uncharacteristically ass-blasted when a friend or family member would invite me to dinner, and there would be nothing for me to eat. At this point, I'd been a vegetarian for a number of years (this played a role in my issues, going back to meat helped a lot), and it had never been that big of an issue before, I'd just shrug it off. But, during that period, really minor things became a commentary on who I was as a person and how little the other person supposedly cared about me.

These days, when I see someone completely blowing a minor slight out of proportion, I can't help but think there's a hint of that going on. Troons are especially prone to it because their entire community is saying that if some rando doesn't play pretend with them, that means the rando "literally" wants them "dead".

My initial surgery was $20,000 that I paid for out of Bar Mitzvah savings from stocks I sold (that were bought when I turned 13 and matured for 16 years).

Selling stocks, especially ones bought by Jewish people, is a pretty dumb thing to do. I'd imagine the dividends would not quite be enough to live on, but would certain cover a fair amount of day-to-day stuff, and by retirement age would probably guarantee a comfortable old person life. Plus, it would be a great safety net for if things went horribly wrong with your finances.
