Credit where credit is due, Lily knows how to pick her demographics; she’ll choose the most divided fanbase’s so she’ll at least have a 50% shot of getting people on her side. Legend of Korra? If it's not a will they won't they thing fucking write it that way. You know how you don't make it a will they won't they thing? Don't have any romantic implications between the characters at all. G's clearly thirsty, and if I recall, both Jerry and comic!Lily have more or less said the only reason they aren't together is because of power dynamics. Even though they are together, technically, because of the mating bond. Which Gardevoir only do to their mates. Even if you're not fucking the thing, Comic!Lily and G are basically a married couple who are choosing to remain celibate.

Jerry, I know your audience consists of clinically braindead potatoes, but most other people aren't that stupid. They can read just fine, and it doesn't matter what you actually write, it doesn't matter what the characters say if the rules you set up, the visuals, etc. paint a different picture, and the picture is a very clear image of a ship-fic where the main characters hooking up is teased and drawn out for as long as humanly possible for, as you call it, melodrama. Even if you have no plans to hook them up, you're still actively teasing the tens of people interested in this shit with constant 'wink-wink, nudge-nudge moments' like G kissing Jerry in a shared dream, or having an AU clone-child together. The kinda shit people who like this ship will see and go 'D'aaaww! They're so pwecious togethew 0w0!' If you, the author, is indulging in giving shippers plenty of material for a pairing you don't support, then you're failing at defusing this notion that it's not a 'will they, won't they thing.' Because the audience's reaction has been the exact same as the audience of those kinds of stories.

You go full defensive mode when people point this out, and if you have to have it pointed out so often, it's less likely that people are too stupid to see your intentions, and more likely that you're not properly conveying your intentions to your audience.
