Roughly 2,000 passengers and crew aboard the Holland America Line Westerdam remain stranded on the open seas on Feb. 12, days after they were supposed to dock in Yokohama, Japan on Feb. 15. Fears of the novel coronavirus (now officially known as COVID-19) has prompted four different nations and the U.S. territory of Guam to deny them entry despite no one on board being diagnosed with the illness that has caused global panic. Now, the cruise line says, Cambodia has granted permission for the ship to dock on Feb. 13.
In a public statement, Holland America Line says the 2,257 passengers and crew members will be able to go ashore in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The cruise line will transfer the passengers over the next few days via charter flights to Phnom Penh, and will pay for each person’s flights home.

The Westerdam is the latest cruise to be caught in the middle of the coronavirus outbreak. A virus-stricken ship has been under quarantine at the Yokohama Bay in Japan since Feb. 5. At least 174 people on board the Diamond Princess have tested positive for the coronavirus as of Wednesday.

Last week, passengers on a World Dream cruise in Hong Kong were held for four days after the company learned that three passengers who had sailed on the vessel earlier were confirmed to have the virus. All passengers were finally allowed to disembark on Monday after all crew tested negative for the virus.

After being denied entry into Japan, Guam, the Philippines and Taiwan, unnerved vacationers on the Westerdam were initially relieved when the cruise ship’s captain announced on Monday that they’d finally be disembarking in Bangkok, Thailand, on Feb. 13. But the ship was back in limbo after Thailand Public Health Minister Anutin Charnverakul shared on Facebook Monday afternoon that it would not be allowed to dock after all.

Globally, more than 45,000 people have been infected with the virus, and more than 1,100 have died as a result. A vast majority of cases have been in mainland China.

More seriously, in a sane country the army would have already had massive rebellions over the treatment of the populace (especially for soldiers from Wuhan), but this is China. The likely scenario for a citizen rebellion is the Chinese people zerg rushing an army base for supplies and beating every soldier to death. With the next likely scenario of China bombing the place and massacring the citizens.

Remember that the authoritarian regime soldiers whose job it is to murder ordinary people are usually also basically ordinary people too. So authoritarian regimes ultimately need to be able to convince ordinary people to kill other ordinary people every couple of generations, which is not easy to do especially if your army is of the same race and cultural background. If the system is obviously bullshit, then ordinary people will be more likely to simply refuse to kill for it, especially refusing to kill their own when they have legitimate grievances. It's like when the East Europeans and Russians started telling the commie goon squads to fuck off in the late 80s; they knew the goons probably weren't about to start shooting them. The Soviet Army was just about up to killing 14 Lithuanians in 1991, but this just caused more outrage elsewhere in the country and the regime was collapsing anyway by that point. And even the Tiananmen demonstrations in China in 1989 had lasted for 6 weeks before Deng Xiaoping's kill squad went in in the middle of the night; before that, the ordinary Chinese army soldiers were fraternising with Tiananmen protesters they were supposed to be intimidating and had to be withdrawn. Unfortunately for the Chinese demonstrators, the Chinese regime was younger and meaner than the Russian one at that point and there were still a few very mean old codgers around in positions of influence that remembered getting bombed by Chiang's air force while on the Long March with Mao and who would have seen shooting up a few thousand malcontents as a great bit of sport.

So while it's possible, I don't see a Chinese Zerg rush coming. For one thing, the contemporary Chinese is far too "modern" (i.e. selfish and cowardly) to be a part of a Zerg rush against any enemy, foreign or domestic. The society needs a period of stagnation where everyone knows that everyone knows the system is fucked and bullshit and needs to go. Then there'll be some event that gets people on the streets and they'll know, by that point, that the regime will not dare start gunning them down. This Corona virus event could well be the beginning of the end, though.

Once those are cut and the municipality or region is functioning independently, restablishing the previous tight control will be difficult.

Yeah, this. China is a big place (as the Chinese never tire of reminding you). And all those enclaves will probably end up faring dramatically differently too. There will also be plenty of stories of animosity between them; one that has already happened is that the city of Dali had commandeered a shipment of face masks destined for Chongqing (not sure if that got posted here yet). I imagine there'll be a lot more of shit like that once supplies start running lower. And once it all settles down, assuming it does, returning commie power may find itself compromised in at least some areas. I can't see a good political future for any commie cadres who quietly bugged out of their domains to wait it out in their ill-gotten townhouses in Vancouver.

I always thought IQ tests were kind of bullshit on this alone. Asians have the highest IQ in the world but independent thinking doesn't seem to be a factor in regards to high intelligence in those tests. I know IQ tests are for the most part accurate (The Bell Curve makes a valid point) but these people literally use shit water to make oil. I'm sure there are certain Hispanic and African countries who aren't as stupid as this (though I could be wrong). You'd think basic sanitary knowledge would be an important factor in finding out if someone is stupid or not. Peasants at least in the middle ages had the excuse that they didn't even know what germs were. But how can you be aware of how badly germs and pollution are and STILL cook your street food with a thousand wasps buzzing around and not care???

Apparently there are also restaurants in China where there are pigs underneath the building and they make holes in the floor for customers to poop in and the pigs eat the poop. Then they kill the pigs to serve to the customer. What the flying fuck.

Asian Americans do well because Asian immigrants tend to be middle class. They also have support networks like churches and temples. More importantly, they had a culture where you can study hard to join the ranks of a scholarly caste.

Asian cultures are top down and this stunts initiative, innovation and self discipline. They hate warriors and merchants due to Confucianism so their governments bloat really quickly.

More importantly, they acquire their morals from society while the West emphasizes individual virtue. This cripples social change.
