In Europe , samples from a certain number of respiratory cases from centres in each country are sent to ECDC so that they can monitor which strains are circulating in the population and plan accordingly. This network (EISN) is pretty effective. The global version is GISN.
I don’t know if samples are archived physically but it would be interesting to comb through the data and see if there was a drop in percentage samples testing positive for influenza at the same time as a rise in confirmed cases and respiratory cases generally. i.e rise in respiratory illness with no associated known cause. Any new significant respiratory illness should be detectable even if it wasn’t characterised simply because there’d be more people presenting with acute respiratory symptoms but they wouldn’t be testing positive for a flu strain.
Someone will be doing this as we speak, I imagine.

“By helping countries in Africa and South Asia get ready now,” we can save lives and also slow the global circulation of this virus,” Gates, the former chairman and chief executive of Microsoft Corp, wrote in an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The novel coronavirus that first emerged in China and has now spread to 46 countries is much harder to stop than similar viruses that caused the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Gates wrote. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has already pledged $100 million to fight the outbreak.

Gates’ plea was echoed on Friday by the World Health Organization, which said the risk was very high that the virus would spread and have a global impact.

The WHO implored governments to swing into action to contain the virus before it becomes widespread. Such actions could slow the virus, giving nations more time to prepare, officials said.

“Health systems around the world are just not ready,” Dr. Mike Ryan, head of the WHO emergencies program, told a news briefing.

Gates said the world needs to invest in disease surveillance and better technology to accelerate the development of safe and effective vaccines and drugs.

Besides technical solutions, Gates called for better diplomatic efforts to drive international collaboration and data sharing, and increased government spending on drugs and vaccines that would give private companies incentives to take up such efforts.

He has absolutely no experience in epidemiology other than throwing money at real medical professionals in an attempt to expiate his sins.

Just as ridiculous as Chelsea Clinton, MA in International Relations, being shilled as a Professor of Public Health at Columbia. Guaranteed to whine Orange Man Virus whenever asked about coronavirus.

We have over 70 cases in Germany (actually they're popping up so fast, nobody can keep track) and it is probable that 60-70% of Germans will become infected over time says Christian Drosten, Berliner Charité:

But people don't seem to panic.

Just came back from shopping and everything's completely normal. No panic buyers. Shelves are full. Nobody's wearing masks. Even in afflicted areas things seem to be "calm." Probably because most Germans have a very phlegmatic temperament.

Except for the exceptional people who seem to spend 24/7 on German News Sites (probably because they're already hiding in their cellar) posting their shitty apocalyptic end time fantasies, half-knowledge (everybody is an expert, you know) and conspiracy theories. Reading those in English is bad enough but in German? German makes everything a 1000x more cringe.

I am surrounded by the foreign public all day, every day due to the nature of my office. The actual workers around me are almost all people that have been born in the States, but we are outnumbered literally 100 to 1 by the public on a slow day. Just last week I was finally able to get money moved to get... Purell dispensers. Great. Those things are almost as bad as the illness.

So, what you all are saying after the past 19 pages is that I should go ahead and have that (Non-China) Asian tour. I'd probably have my choice of seats, walk up into business class and enjoy a seat there, and raid their liquor. Then I'll get to take pictures of my quarantine, scaring the fuck out of my paranoid family, right? Because, fuck it? There's no more containment!

It's ironic that I feel better about surviving a happening in my little neighborhood that the UWS. Lots of Dominicans and other hispanics used to power going out, hurricanes destroying homes and other disasters so less prone to panic and willing to help each other out. The UWS is full of people on a shitton of antidepressants and no survival skills that will cry about Drumpfvirus while getting stabbed by looters.
