The Final Fantasy Thread

The GBA version is buggy as fuck but the PSP version is the best since it fixes the bugs and comes with the After Years but yeah good luck finding a copy since it's PSP.
I have the PSP version but my PSP started making this awful loud grinding sound (I mean even worse than usual) so I stopped using it because it sounded like it was going to ruin the disk.

I liked Advent Children Complete well enough. It was alright. I just wish there wasn't so much anime jumping and flying around. I didn't hate Cloud in it, either, it made sense why he would be the way that he was and some of his endgame personality in VII was mistranslated. My biggest problem was that if they're going to bring back Sephiroth you might as well do it early in the movie so we didn't have to deal with those three dumbasses.

I guess judging from the Sephiroth dialogue we seem likely to get, no one at SE remembers that Sephiroth initially didn't even know who Cloud was upon re-awakening. It took Sephiroth/Jenova awhile to connect him to the random grunt that got a lucky shot on the earlier incarnation.
It's funny seeing you be pessimistic about the remake, compared to the Witcher TV show thread, while I'm the more optimistic one.

I am starting to question whether to keep my XIV sub going or not. The community is infested with SJWs who get offended at every single plot point in the game. I also love the accusations of the MSQ writer being a misogynist despite said writer being a woman. FFXIV twitter is full of lolcows who frequently have meltdowns over the plot. XIV is one of the least sexist games I have ever played. I am also seeing meltdowns over the latest Eden raid for this patch.

If you still like the game and have people you enjoy playing with, I don't understand why you can't just divest yourself from the larger community while still enjoying the game itself. Every game is gonna have its community of freaks and weirdos, and while FFXIV may be more susceptible to that because of its largely female fanbase, you shouldn't let that put you off a game you like.

Someone mentioned the Ultimania stuff being non-canon as far as they’re concerned and I kinda have to agree. At least when it comes to IX.

Sperging incoming:

So I’m supposed to believe the ending takes place a mere month after the final boss? Considering how much Garnet’s hair grew, I find that unlikely. I guess you could argue hair extensions, but still.

Also I doubt Vivi would have created clones of himself, help them gain sentience and teach them the ways of the world in that amount of time either. Especially considering he dies not too long after.

At the very least, there has to been at least a six month gap. A year at most.

Finally, while I don’t mind the Eidolon/Crystal connection, I kinda preferred when the origins of the Eidolons were kept relatively vague. Adds to the mystique of the game for me. That’s just me though.

Why are you even playing an MMO in current year?

Shit can be made into private servers, grinds and timesinks can be removed, and private servers allow more freedom and are also free.

There's load of much better regular RPGs out there and if you absolutely need to have another human being with you there's also Monster Hunter Iceborne.

Like the Tales series has Vesperia and Berseria which are both very good and play on recent hardware. Switch has Xenoblade 2 and it's stand alone prequel game. Dragon Quest 111 exists on all platforms, Persona 5 Royal is coming soon, you have Atelier Ryza, Ys 8 and Ys Memories of Celceta are both very good, Rune Factory 4 Special just came out for The Switch, Trails of cold Steel 1, 2 , and 3 are available on all platforms,.

Just let the MMO genre die, it's way too hampered with a load of bullshit. Tabletop games have more people playing them than MMos at this point and those existed before MMOs were even a thing.

It's twitter, I went to the official forums and it isn't that bad.

I haven't been on the SE MMO official forums in years, but they had vast thundering herds of morons like Analhelm running free and untrolled (the trolls are banned and their posts deleted; truly a terrible tragedy). If the official forums aren't that bad compared to Twitter, FFXIV Twitter must be truly terrible.

The only reason for my annoyance is that since people can visit other servers freely there is a higher chance of running into crazies. Thankfully I have not ran into any Balmung ERP players yet. I also know quite a few people on my time line I had to block because they suddenly started going full SJW and complaining about the writers being racist and misogynistic. Adding on to the fact that SE has gotten ban crazy with their latest harassment policies where you can get banned at the drop of a hat for anything. I love this game and the community was never this bad in the beginning. I noticed the community started declining after Heavensward came out.

FFXIV Twitter is terrible but a wonderful lolcow breeding ground. The pre release Shadowbringers wank was fun. I laughed so hard at the melt down over the Viera and Hrothgar being genderlocked as well as a group of crazy Viera fans calling others racist for planning on playing light skinned Viera.

I find the fact X is ranked number one to be interesting. I love X, it's in my top 3 FF games, but it's not my number 1. But the Japanese rank all the "popular" ones here in the west slightly lower than X.

I think the reason why X isn't as popular here is because of the dubbing. JRPGs had a pretty big fall from grace starting in the PS2 era because of shitty voice acting. Back in the PS1 days you could read the text and put whatever inflection/accent you want but it still sounds favorable to you.

Once voice acting started to come in the culture gap grew.

FFX was not close to my favorite game but it had an amazing piano collections release

One of my favorite video game songs out there

The VA in X was fucking terrible, The only VAs that did well were Auron's, Wakka's and ek...

It's no coincidence that the best voice performance in that game belongs to a character whose mouth is usually not visible. I don't know why they tried to so slavishly match the lip synching to the Japanese version but it murders performance.

All you need to throw against Advent Children is:
-Rufus not dead
-Sephiroth shows up again
-the fights not fitting at all with what the characters were capable of in FF7.

I liked Advent Children Complete well enough. It was alright. I just wish there wasn't so much anime jumping and flying around. I didn't hate Cloud in it, either, it made sense why he would be the way that he was and some of his endgame personality in VII was mistranslated.

This source sums up Cloud's JP personality and problems in Compilation:

My problem with the Cloud-Zack connection in Crisis Core is that Cloud was indeed pragmatic, arrogant, and quite the sarcastic anti-hero from the start of the game, and that persona really only broke down after Cloud's recovery from Mako poisoning and he realized who he was again. After that, Cloud, while still being a little snarky was way more similar to how Zack is portrayed in Crisis Core. When Cloud finally regained himself, he was a little more goofy, a little more kind, and a lot more optimistic (which completely through me off when I watched AC for the first time).
If Cloud really took on Zack's persona at the end of Crisis Core he would have acted like Zack to begin with, and then changed into his own personality at the end. Instead, it seems Cloud's personality at the end is more similar to Zack in Crisis Core.

Quoted for effing truth. I keep saying the same thing. If anything - in the original, pre-memory fix Cloud has more in common with Sephiroth than with Zack, making the comparison between Cloud and Zack utterly bizarre.
This is probably true. Though I also think that a lot of people just sorta forgot what Cloud was originally like playing the game.
Time passed, people played FF8 and FF9 etc. and the only memories that stuck with them from FF7 were naturally the most iconic ones, like the death of Aerith etc. where Cloud is, understandably, very emotional and very sad. Those scenes though, conspire to render their impression of Cloud as being largely emotional and sad as a character when they can't remember any of his other traits.
I'm playing the OG in Japanese on my PS Vita right now, and there, it's more obvious than ever that pre-memory fix Cloud has absolutely nothing in common with Zack what so ever. If anything, compared to the western localization, Cloud is a real jaded a-hole. His speech pattern, and sociolect shows him as often being condescending and mean - like a less slang-ridden Barret and less swearing Cid, but just as abrasive but without "a heart of gold" to compensate for it like the two other characters. It really isn't except when Tifa calls up memories of his old self, or when Aerith starts kicking on his heart-strings that Cloud shows any signs of being anything more than his SOLDIER persona in the beginning of the game.
