Closing for a year+ until a vaccine is ready will cause total economic collapse. Failure of major chain stores, supply lines, ece.

even with china/iran/italy numbers most people are still in working condition. plus you can't quarantine a whole society for a year, that's not how it works. at some point people will go back out again, advised or not. and the longer it goes on the harder people will look at the numbers and will conclude that even 5% death rate is acceptable for the other 95%.

instead of death camps, daily life will simply adjust because most of all people are used to cushy modern comfort. so italians might be less hands on in the future and everybody will be more aware of keeping their distance and what they touch for a while, but people will for the most part stop giving a shit, especially with the news cycle having moved on and for most corona not having any impact on an individual level.

Also, those global daily figures were worked out at the upper estimate for global flu deaths of around 650,000. The lower estimate of 296,000 a year would work out at 811 a day, which we passed some time ago.

that's comparing "peacetime" numbers vs an already strained health infrastructure, with known vaccines and treatment. a flu pandemic or any pandemic really would look worse in comparison.
