They might want to check in with their 'allies' who insist that, no, Defund/Abolish the police means exactly that, abolish the police entirely. People aren't being misleading and manipulative, or even just taking you at face value that when you say 'Abolish the Police' that it's exactly what you mean. I can only speak to what I've seen but there are tons of women in STEM, though it's true that engineering and computer science (though increasingly less so) are sausage fests, a lot of that is because women just don't fucking apply because it is never presented to them as a career option in high school, or they switch programs because they are sick of being swarmed by men creeping on them being one of the only women in said sausage fests. It's kind of like men being under-represented in nursing despite being perfectly capable, it's just not presented to them as an option, and they don't want to deal with the stereotype of male nurses being faggots. The "racialized people" thing is just completely fucking inaccurate... STEM and engineering are fucking dominated by Asians and Indians, with a fair amount of blacks from Africa or the Caribbean, either on student visa or first-gen Canadians. Do they not fucking count? If anything it's the humanities where whites are ridiculously over-represented.

Oh and Indigenous people get basically free post secondary education here should they wish to pursue it, so if they're staying on the rez to huff gas instead, that's a whole other issue that isn't going to be solved by lowering standards for them via affirmative action. They self govern so it's their community that needs to light a fire under their asses, we keep throwing money at the problem which fulfills our responsibility as far as I'm concerned. Not that making them dependent on government aid seems to do diddly shit for actually helping them but whatever. Go work as a hideously underpaid guidance counselor on a rez in Shithole, Alaska if you care that much.

Affirmative action can help uplift the 10-20% of black kids whose parents (or, statistically, mother and aunt/grandmother) into better lives but at that rate it would take centuries to see it putting a dent on black poverty or black crime.

Unfortunately, waving a big white flag saying "we totally helped!" as minorities get hired solely to complete the company's HR Pantone color chart is a lot cheaper and easier.

Exactly. We don't have black crime/poverty as a widespread issue here as it is in the US, but their community has the exact same issue Natives have here: Schools are violent cesspits with shit retention rates, and even when teachers and guidance counselors are trying to do good for the kids, a lot turn into jaded shitheads (or if they're white turn into racist shitheads) who punish the problem kids unfairly to the point they drop out, even when they're not doing anything that bad, they just don't like them after a while. Of course most of the problem kids are the way they are because of abusive households with drug use, crime and poverty contributing to exclusion, aggression, apathy, or any variety of mental health issues, and even the best school can only do so much in those cases if the parents are abusive or absent. The best shot they have is trying to establish/enhance alternative education programs, which can be kind of shit, but can at least provide something to help kids learn to be productive and provide ways to work around shit circumstances like being in charge of running the household and raising multiple siblings or the kid they got knocked up with at 13, being in group homes or foster care, that sort of thing. We abolished discrimination in hiring practices as much as we legally could, we have youth job programs and it's not like they have signs that say "no coloreds" for fucksake. Whitey can't do shit if people want to turn down these opportunities to pop out kids early and hop on the generational welfare train.
