Crunch is a time-honored old tradition among programmers, individually or in groups, but it's a bigger issue now than it used to be. Back in the day when the development team was made up of six guys who stayed up on caffeine binges for days on end, crunch could become more of a wild coding party than "work." Today a AAA blockbuster employs hundreds of people and can take years. Every employee will have different stress thresholds and personal, family, etc. obligations.
Work conditions will happen if they aren't managed. I'm not denying this, but Schreier wants to be the Woodward of the gaming industry, uncovering sordid secrets and harsh truths. He gets to be the hero of the blue-haired who see "Gaymergaaate!" in everything, and in turn keep his name a hot commodity. And the ResetEra threads on crunch just reinforce what we already know about them: they don't play games, they don't understand how games work and they certainly don't code.
