ID is seen as safe because as long as they don't touch on religious topics or get too edgy with nudity, they don't have to worry too much about politically motivated antis. It's an emerging market with the 4th largest population in the world and has a pre-existing anglophone weeb culture. After EN, it's the safest place to expand.
Recent example on how religion is a sensitive issue in Indonesia is Moona's tweet. I don't remember what she joked about (and it's deleted) but it contains the word "Astaghfirullah" and "Jesus Christ". She apologized afterwards, but probably because management told her to do so.
Fun fact: There's a running joke in Indonesian community about "tebak agama VTuber" (guessing VTuber's religion).

I'll be a son of a bitch, it's bigger than Brazil. Why does it feel like we never hear about it? Now I'm curious and I'm probably going to be up all night falling down Wikipedia rabbit holes about this place, because I feel so ignorant about what should be a very consequential part of the world.
Indonesia is the biggest Literally Who of the world. There's more chance of people knowing Bali than Indonesia itself.

So I like to check pixiv/danbooru as I’m falling asleep. It’s relaxing seeing nice pictures. Anyway, I found these and it made me super happy, because I love the late-80’s anime aesthetic. (Ryo Saiba is the world’s coolest dude.). Thought I’d share.

Pretty sure Bluethebone has porn/nude variants of all those pictures as well. Incidentally, it's always been really funny to me how Calli was ecstatic about that piece and even used it for a thumbnail despite the fact that it was promo'd with 18+ variants available as paid rewards.

HoloID has superchat. It's just that Youtube for whatever reason hasn't implemented Superchat for Indonesia, despite just how big Youtube is here
I suspect it has something to dk with the currency, but Argentina has it, so I suspect it has something to do with taxes

Rather than superchat, the HoloID girls rely on streamlabs. So compared to Youtube, how much does Streamlabs take?

If i may sperg a bit, Indonesia's the largest archipelago country in the world, and almost half of the population comes from the Java island, which is where most of the development and cities are densely packed at until very recently where more infrastructure was more spread out. It's one of those countries that i always thought had potential but a lot of our leaders have fuckin squandered it. I was actually suprised that Hololive and Nijisanji has an ID branch at all, because we usually don't get any good official weeb shit over here.

Well, it's the Venti argument again. Sexualization of minor characters is part of a broader, possibly problematic trope in anime, but I don't think the vast majority of people watching someone like Amelia are doing so for sexual gratification. At least I'd like to think so, but who knows…
There has been a rising trend for anime antis to attack anything that resembles anime-style thing. From loli to even buff gay manga. Unsurprisingly, of course, those kind of people have a subtle racial bias towards anything Japanese or Asian. Kinda like a Yellow Peril situation, but anime
Korea is almost as problematic for Japanese companies to operate in as China. While the average Jap hardly ever thinks about Korea aside from K-drama, terminally online people in Japan tilt right wing. The same goes for Koreans. Some of Hololive's most notable Japanese fans are net-uyou /pol/ types or adjacent, like Mizuryu "The Holocaust Is Fiction" Kei.

Motherfucker, did you just used a touhou orgy doujin to talk about politic and morality? However, considering that Mizuryu Kei is extremely internet aware, especially during that time, I'm not surprised he leans that way or something.
I know I shouldn't look for morality from hentai artists but that's kind of a bummer to see since I like his stuff. Also the claim that cheese pizza doesn't exist is just bizarre.

Edit: I'm now feeling weird about owning his doujin about the Kantai Collection girls being turned into comfort women.
I feel like I know which doujin you're talking about. One thing about Kancolle that killed it is that the game is designed way too favoring of the Japanese side, and any sort of discussion about that topic seriously is a radioactive landmine. The reasons Azur Lane overtake Kancolle was because it's chinese, instead of WWII they focused on modern aesthetic, and most importantly, the designs are straight up borderline porn

This is actually something that surprised a lot of people outside of Indonesia. I remember the AlternateHistoryHub guy saying on twitter he's surprised that any news about Indonesia is pretty much non-existent

That said, I'm actually surprised both Cover and Ichikara would choose Indonesia over something like Singapore or Thailand, both have massive weebs scene and are quite a rich country

Mizuryu is two degrees of seperation away from most of Hololive JP and Nijisanji. Finding a net-uyou at comiket is like finding a Nazi in 1950s NASA. Even the non extremist current or former 5ch users are wary of koreans considering that there's been a constant low level net war between Japan and Korea since the 90s.

Doing business in Korea as a Japanese company is really hard because Koreans are like Chinese and basically ignore Japanese copyright on purpose mainly out of spite.

Taiwan, Singapore and Vietnam are the only countries in Asia that have their shit together and tolerate Japan.

I would give all the bones in my body to see the Chinese just straight up clone every Hololive talent but with new Chinese names and voice actors. :story:

I agree, but bigger subs also *in general* mean a bigger live audience. I think the general rule of thumb for vtuber is like 0.01% of the subs is live viewer? So it still meant a difference between having 200k subs and a million.
I know there are a few Hololive members with more modest subs who hit above their weight. Flare was the surprise for me, her sub count is not high for Hololive but she was ranked in 12th in terms of superchat earnings 3ish months back. I think Kiara is the same, she has the lowest sub count among EN but her KFP fans are dedicated.

Ain't this decades ago, like back in the 80s-90s? Asia at that period of time was like a wild west of copyright infringement, absolutely chaotic. That said, I think the biggest reason why something like Vtubers won't be successful in Korea is that I think most of the internet there prefers traditional streamers, like the tiddy e-thot kinds. Reason being is that they prefer actual human faces rather than 2d ones like Vtubers. I mean, just look at K-Pop. Even Korean manhwa or the kind always have a more realistic approach on art compared to manga

On China though, I don't really know. But my suspicion is that most of the mainland's internet, due to how empty and cynical their society is, fell prey to the parasocial nature of streamers and internet celebs, especially Idols

Japanese media is still officially censored in South Korea, it's just selectively enforced. Koreans pretty much never get charged for things like IP or trade secret theft as long as the target is Japan. It's a bad market with a non-cooperative government.

heh? this is new to me, im understand if the reason due historical issue, with JP and KR hate each other and some old people like your parents age probably still having hate feeling toward each other country. but again now day i though they are already in good term due many animator working in anime also coming from KR, and some KR mobile game getting translation in JP.

i just still cant believe that JP more cooperate with ID, despite its the 4th biggest country and literally who country, i dont think many willing to spend money on thing like this, even if there is (which ofcourse) the number not as big as they expect. many just enjoy free content and pirate it. or i assume when it come to spending money either on super chat or anything else, small number of whaler goes all out supporting their streamer.

but again it can be help by ID girl at least understand english, and each of them start to get their own moment, such as Moona x Pekora, Risu with her NNN and voice, Iofi with Sora or heck any other JP Vtuber i guess. so they attract overseas which is i assumed their main market rather than Indonesian itself. idk if they will survive if only rely and their goal is ID only, as much as Cover not bother with income (for now) if its continue idk they will ignore that stuff

I would give all the bones in my body to see the Chinese just straight up clone every Hololive talent but with new Chinese names and voice actors. :story:

i wouldnt be surprised honestly, tthey have mobile overwatch, mobile fall guys 2-4 days after it launch on steam, heck they have clones of cyberpunk 2077 with your generic look of chinese mmo lol. they prolly will make their own cover, required you to login wechat or whatever their social media, to doing donation while prolly rich guy that you guys used to talk about have their data so they can keep in track whose messing with their waifu or talk shit about them

From our Western sensibility, that both Holo and Niji have built and maintained a presence in Indonesia compared to what one would think would be a more profitable market like Korea or China feels really… random? I can only imagine that there's some sort of massive, money-spending weeb front there under the surface which has made it worth their while and their paths just don't intersect with western weebs that much. I hope we can get more backstory on that some way or another some day.

The tldr is that China was a networking move that ended up not working out, which rules out Singapore and Thailand as targets for a forgein chuuba. The billibilli connections could have been great if not for a certain fatal incident.

So the process of Cover goes a little something like this. Keep in mind this is all speculation.
JP is the first branch, duh.
Then comes the 3-man IN gen 1, because of low upkeep costs.
Then they notice the underground chuuba market in CN and billi, so they decide to expand in that direction, burning cash to establish roots and an official fanbase. This is where the “Overseas market have not turned a profit.” thing likely comes from, because they had to officially partner with billibilli.

Seeing a huge community pop up in CN, and with overseas engagement trickling down from Coco, they decide to go all-in on the foreign market and begin EN and ID2 auditions. Difficulties due to Corona delays Gen5 debut, who get to know each other in the meantime.

Gen 5 debuts, Aloe’s situation explodes and they’re left to suffer the aftermath. Graduates August 31st. Is a sad day.

EN announced on Sept 8th, all debut on the 12th. Superchats enabled in a week, massive earnings, memberships, the whole shebang. Things are bright for the future.

September 26th. T-word incident. Coco and Haachama suspended for 3 weeks. And you probably know how the rest of the story goes.

Simple:

JP ->ID -> CN -> EN -> CN(ded)

Today news on the ongoing ching being salty at anime girls. FBK, Botan, and Okayu was suppose to have an official sponsored collab with Republic of Gaming tonight, but was attacked by the RoG in China and have to cancelled it. Link to reddit because I'm lazy af.
Hololive and Coco is living rent-free in their heads. Any guess on how long till the Chinese stops caring about Hololive?
