There was also a short-lived trend of Pseudo VN videos for New Vtubers to introduce themselves around that time.

The Kizuna Ai clone arc

People realized Ai's voice was different, Company never said they had 4 different VAs, they got called out and finally put out that there are 4 different Ais but people already lost interest by then

I loved the clone arc, and I’ve always hated how up-in-arms people got.

Yes, the company was treating Kizuna as a character not as a “personality“, but they hadn’t tried to ever establish her as a “personality” the way Hololive has with their girls. No one complains that Kermit the Frog or Mickey Mouse or Goku have had multiple voice actors.

People got way too invested in the drama of her roommate and refused to accept the kayfabe, and thanks to that AiPii left the industry all together, so fuck them.

She privated all archives that involves Asuka Hina, my guess is that to memory holed any references to teikagumi to respect Hina's memory lost and new backstory afterwards.
They still haven't interact on social media and Rion doesn't mentions Hina to this day.

Kermit is a character, most of Kizuna's content was improv/unscripted so changing her VA and pretending she never left is a lot different than replacing a VA on a TV show.

Once the clones started taking over the AI Games channel I just unsubbed because they weren't the personalities I really subbed over (Yeah, I never really gave them a chance but I also wasn't as entertained by the newer ones either). I probably would've given them more of a chance if they'd just bothered to be upfront about it to begin with and at least made them different colors instead of just slightly different costumes.

The last video I saw was after the original AI had returned, she was "Re-doing" her debut to "Prove that she never left" which was kinda insulting since she was gone for quite a long time

Most of her early stuff - all of her shorts, and even her game playthroughs - was clearly either scripted, like HoloGra, or edited into a video with stuff on the cutting room floor. It might have been lightly scripted, but they were definitely scripted.

The clones were better at gaming than Ai and had more interesting reactions, but fine, I can accept people have different tastes.

They did do this after the first few weeks when they realized that they had miscalculated the Kizuna = character, and gave the girls earrings and names, and people still pitched a fit anytime OG Kizuna wasn’t in a video, and even refused to do subs for any videos not featuring her.
