Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
You are 100% coping if you insist that Legends (graphically) looks like anything but shit. Stop pretending. Whoever the fuck thought it was a good idea to put bird's-eye views of your repeating ground textures not just in a trailer but as the main focus needs to be fired. But I'd imagine you could drop most of GF's staff without any real trouble.

Change the thread title, there's no grieving when the whole funeral's fucking the corpse.
Legends do look promising, certainly more than BDSP which won't be the definitive Sinnoh experience. Still this is Game Freak we're talking about so they will probably fuck it up anyway.

In case anyone's really curious what they're gonna do with post-gen 4 pokemon in BDSP, let me share my two cents;

If this outsourced studio is looking to implement fairy type, then I don't think there's any conceivable way they can avoid implementing Sylveon, since Eevee evolves into Sylveon when it knows a fairy move. Likewise, if they implement regional forms, and if the first 493 pokemon are in the game, then I don't see how they can avoid including sirfetch'd and obstagoon, pre-gen 4 pokemon who evolve from one of the first 493 pokemon too. Their solution would have to be either to disallow regional forms or include certain pokemon from after DP. There's also the new Hisuian(?) forms like the Basculin evolution and the Stantler evolution and the new (old? Lol) Growlithe forms.

As for whether or not they'll include the new Legends Arceus pokemon in the mainline games, I wouldn't get my hopes up, at least for Sword and Shield. This is Game Freak, who, despite the existence and prominence of remote updates, refused to implement the ORAS mega evolutions in XY. They're legendarily fucking lazy.

I'm also very curious as to what they're gonna do with Pal Park, since obviously it can't be used in the same capacity as it was in the original DPPt games... unless they're planning to make it so you can only import 6 pokemon a day from Pokemon Bank. Lol

Anyway that's something to ponder until these games come out. I'll likely get Shining Pearl, since I had Pearl when I was younger.

Till then.

Regional forms aren't main game gimmicks. If the regional forms from gen 7 are still around then I don't see why they can't bullshit a reason for these forms to still be usable. Then again, this may be the only time where they have a somewhat acceptable excuse to not migrate Legends' variants to later or earlier games.

I was watching someone go over what was shown from the Presents and the one thing that bothered me about that video was them saying that they thought Stanler's design was hideous.

I understand that people have their likes and dislikes with pokemon designs, but seriously?

This is hideous?

When we currently have greatest contender for most unappealing design right here (according to the people I've seen talk about it)?

Stantler doesn't look bad to me, but it's easy to see why it does: the beak-like nose and face structure in general.

As for Bruxish, good god does that thing look gross. It's the garish colours and especially the human-like lips and teeth, as opposed to even just slightly more fishlike ones like Goldeen. It's like those moments in a disney animation when a human character turns into an animal but you can see the human's traits and design come through... except that human is a 50 year old celebrity who was a hasbeen even when the 80's workout tape they came from was produced.

Generally, for me, I can appreciate any Pokemon design that I understand why it's made like that. Though I don't mind Togepi, Vullaby makes a lot more sense to me, as it's clearly based on that image of baby birds hatching and squawking while still in the egg. Mandibuzz's "bone diaper" is clearly meant to be it's nest.

Incineroar I feel is a design maligned more because of other preceding fire starters than Incineroar himself. Even @Don't @ Me 's response has a hint of that. And if having the inspiration of Wukong is enough to excuse Infernape, then @Don't @ Me might be surprised to learn that the wrestling-themed incineroar is based on Tiger Mask, a comic book character evolved into a wrestler persona that's lived from 1968 to today.

He's also likely the inspiration behind Kemono Michi's mc wrestler and even has a reference character in ace attorney. And probably many others too.

Just because you don't know the reference doesn't mean that they're not making one, @Don't @ Me

If we're talking about bad designs, though, can we talk about the time that, rather than any sort of subtle version or reference, they just straight up gave Toxel a diaper?

I mean come on. You have rockstar-themed evolved forms for a Pokemon and their pre-evo is a literal pantshitter? Not anything cooler or anything thematic? Maybe they could have made it some pre-evolution before a professional musician, like an amateur musician or a drummer. Nope, instead we get the baby in it's most literal form yet.

The thing that kinda flips me up is that there are regional forms with different or extra evolutions, like Perrserker, Sirfetched, and Obstagoon, which, if those pre-evolved regional forms are included, then they can't avoid including those evolved forms either. I think it'd be kinda awkward though, if they were planning on including the Nat. Dex up to 493, to skip a few hundred pokedex entries after Arceus just to account for them in the dex. It might be confusing to kids and normies, cus then they'll be like "Why is there a gap in numbers between 493 and 862?? Where are the pokemon between?"

Maybe they'll take the SwSh route and just simply not put them in the dex while still putting them in the game, like what SwSh did with the legendaries, I dunno.

That is pretty cool, but I wasn't talking about whether it was a good or bad design, it was just about what designs were "hideous", as vague as that is. Probably could've emphasized that more. I gave Incineroar more flak than it deserves, sure. I just remember when I was playing through Moon, I chose Litten because I wanted a badass big cat, and was not expecting cat-man. My initial reaction was disappointment, and how its proportions weirded me out.

I don't hate its design, especially if it is based on a cool masked wrestler, I just wish Torracat gave some reference to that then, like you said with Toxel and not looking anything like a rockstar. It's like they designed the last evolution and went "Oh shit, wait, we need other ones, don't we?"

If I ever play through my Ultra Sun, I'd probably still pick Litten, even if Incineroar's not exactly what I wanted. On the point of Infernape and Wukong though, I more meant that I gave it a pass because even though it's clearly based on Wukong, it still looks like a monkey, not just a monkey-dude. If that makes any sense.

I'd probably go for Oshawott. I'm just a fan of water-types in general and even though Samurott's moveset kind of sucks, it's hard to beat annihilating everything with a booster Surf. Rowlett is a close second because I chose him for my SwSh playthrough, though.

I never understood the Samurott hate. It’s awesome and I feel it would be appreciated a lot more if it was its own Pokemon line and not part of Oshawott’s line. The thing is, if Oshawott’s final form was bipedal people would bitch about it being furry bait.
Samurott is based on sea lions while Osha and Dewott are based on otters.

A gamefreak dev was visiting the zoo and got distracted by sea lions while thinking about Oshawott's final evolution.:shit-eating:

Go figure out the rest.

I know. That’s why I said I feel it would probably be appreciated a lot more if it was not a part of the evolution line and was its own thing.

This is what I currently use in my playthrough of the SoulSilver Battle Frontier, and what I will also use in Platinum. I won't post their movesets, but here's a hint. All of them were built around OU and Uber tiers from Smogon.

Based Togekiss user.

If I decide to get Legends the choice between starters is going to be very hard for me thanks to all three of them being starters I really love. I might leave it to an RNG to decide which one to go for in the end if I'm not certain on what I want.

Probably going to go with Oshawott to give him a second chance at being something worthwhile
Not that I didn't like him before but this really could be his time to shine

Recent. For context in this video. This is after I won the Silver Print in the Battle Arcade. The roll here got me into a fog. The rest of the battle is crazy.

UPDATE: In the Battle Frontier, there really is no such thing as "the perfect team". Chances are, the AI wants to murder your entire team, it will do that, strategy be damned.

Even during my play in Emerald. The reason for this is that the algorithm has the probability of you getting hit with something like a critical pre-set.

Unless you created a save state BEFORE you choose to press "Continue", if you do so in the middle of a battle, the outcome WILL BE THE SAME EVERY TIME.

This guy tries to do the “let’s look at both sides” approach but very obviously has a genwun bias. Not to mention cherry picking certain designs while ignoring ones that would go against the narrative. Also bringing up the “soul vs. souless” post from reddit kills the video. Besides gen 2 was when the sharper looking designs were phased out, you had Pokemon like Sneasel and Tyranitar but for the most part the Johto dex is pretty notorious for being full of simpler and cuter designs compared to Kanto’s.

Also the comments section is a huge genwunner circlejerk.

That reminds me of a series of videos I mentioned in a differen thread.
This post shall mix the fakemon theme of this thread wi the drama of these forums.

Around the time the fir starters of Galar were vealed (but no more, I should emphasise), Totally Not Mark made a Twitter poll on which generation had the best designs.
The results were in this video:
In summary: 'the poll pretty much said tha the best designs were up to Generation 4. I say that is because the monsters from Generation 1 tended to be tougher and more monstrous while being made through the process of adding imagination to rea life. However, later generations, in appealing to younguer generations, decided to make thing softer, rounder, and toy-based. My redesign of Scorbunny is more loyal to the design sensibilities of the original.'

A couple of people found issue wi the way Totally Not Mark did the poll and the video:
In summary: 'every generation had both tough monsters and sof toys. Totally Not Mark also confused design and art style. His poll was also biased: Totally Not Mark based his commentary on ly Generation 1 when the poll, which paired up generations, showed that people favoured multiple generations. He also jumped to conclusions because Generation 8, a the time, only revealed 3 Pokémon.'

Thankfully, Totally Not Mark is a good sport:

(Disclaimer: I am reuploading smaller but lower-quality versions of the videos that would not overwhelm the post. I backed up the highest-quality versions, though.)

I don't entirely agree with this mindset, at least not in the way that gen one is superior or anything, kind of don't really care for it. But I do think this explains some of my issues with a lot of Pokemon designs, especially starters. I wish they were more animalistic/realistic, as opposed to merchandisable creations.

The oddest thing about Pokemon to me, has always been their size and their weight. Do you know what the heaviest Pokemon is? Pretty much a threeway tie between Primal Groudon, Cosmoem, and Celesteela, at a whopping 999kg (2204 lbs). That seems like a lot, like wow, that's heavy! Except it's really not. Remember that in the case of Groudon, this is a Pokemon capable of shifting the continental structure of the planet, and yet the average elephant weighs around 7 times that! Even Copperajah, the elephant Pokemon whose ability doubles its weight, only weighs about 1350kg. Don't even get me started on height, and if a dev came out and said the only reason Pokemon are so small is so that when they came out with HG/SS they could have reasonably sized sprites follow the trainer, I'd believe it.

Like I know they're supposed to be monsters that fit in your pocket, that's the tagline, but they're seriously just big, sentient toys. I don't think that gen one necessarily did a better job of this, but at least there was a mentality about making Pokemon fit into the natural world, at least according to those three lost Pokedex videos. There was the idea that a Pokemon couldn't be made until Gamefreak could decide on the Pokemon's diet, what habitats they lived in, how they interacted with actual animals, etc.

I also feel like some of the comparisons in the video I posted are a tad unfair since a lot of them focus on non fully evolved Pokemon. Zorua’s evolution still has that menacing “old school” look and isn’t cutesy. Karrablast’s evolution definitely doesn’t have any soft looking features. I felt the video I posted would be better if the creator showed a variety of Pokemon from both the old and new artstyles that shows exceptions to the design philosophies to feel less biased. Gen 1 had a lot of “monstrous” Pokemon with the trademark sharp eyes but you also had a good handful of cutesy Pokemon like Clefairy and Eevee. Even Dragonite wouldn’t feel out of place in the “newer” art style.

On the modern design side you got simple designs but also plenty of “monstrous” and “realistic” designs. Fletchling and Pikipek deifintely look more simple than Pidgey but their evolutions are on the same level of detail and monsterous as Pidgeot, with more realistic anatomy.

Personally I think it’s just good to look at the entire picture instead of fitting everything into boxes,

Maybe it’s just my Unovabortion bias talking but I feel like gen v was the last time the final evolution of the starters felt like actual beasts. Even Emboar was able to balance being bipedal with a monstrous design.
