it's her way of trying to give the illusion of being a dainty goddess. We all know dainty goddesses are the pickiest of eaters, and wouldn't dare sully their palates with the likes of pizza, eggs, bacon, chicken, or bananas! Oh no, it's nothing but slop du jour for the dantiest queen, with only the most carefully stewed chilli, or rice with canned soup, cauliflower with sloppy joe, or watery pasta with mustard, salsa, and olives.

It's easy to go and blame the childhood, but sadly, for people like Hamber, I think it's a very conscious decision. It's literally fucking impossible to ignore the fact she's ruining her body. She spends all day reading about the shit killing her, so she can make vague excuses it doesn't apply to her..and in some idiotic 'I'm better then you!' she does shit tok ill her self quicker to..prove haters 'wrong'.

She isn't dumb in the sense she's handicapped either for reading etc. She clearly can read, I think she can easily comprehend what she reads at times. I also think she refuses to care. She has nothing to live for, so why would she bother??

When you boil it down to basics, Amber chose food as a crutch to deal with her problems. Others react with self destructive behavior like drugs or sleeping around etc. Some people would see where they are going and get a wake up call and stop. Amber's willpower is shit so her "wake ups" are punctuated with a "oh well".

She's not going to wake up, she can't even get out of bed. She's past waking up at this point. Even with the loss, she'll pick at something to make Necky go grab her something from Walmart so she can erase all the progress.

This is an overly-simplified explanation but in general when there's trauma there's a way to cope with it to survive. Even most adults don't have the tools to deal with intense psychological pain like that but children are completely helpless. So if one can't deal with the pain, one has to resort to distraction. Little Amber had nothing but food to distract herself with. Since she never got the kind of specialized care she needed (somehow I doubt the therapy she was forced to attend in foster care was adequate), those dysfunctional patterns became cemented as her only coping mechanism. She has been eating instead of properly dealing with her emotions (pleasant or unpleasant) her entire life and it compromised her physiologically (addiction of any kind fucks up brain chemistry + eating nothing but junk food your entire life fucks up tastebuds, GI tract, hormones).

So it's not a particular type of trauma that makes you morbidly obese, although it's not uncommon for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to become deathfats. It's more a matter of what's available to the child to numb the pain and later in life whether they're able/willing to get professional help.
