Gab.ai is ran by some fat dipshit who makes Periscope videos where he is literally walking around his back yard panting and huffing and crying about censorship. It started off as an asset flip of an open source PHP project found out Github and is now a million dollar startup company which did meet its $1m goal of private funding a few months ago.

It aims to be a "free speech twitter alternative", but is already banning racists and has added a NSFW tickbox to comply with Apple Store rules because apparently they think they should be making Apple apps instead of just using web browsers to achieve what they want very easily. Every single person on Gab is fucking insane. Almost all of them seem to say "free speech" but covertly mean "hugbox for my own beliefs". It fell into the 8chan pitfall right off the fucking bat by making itself an extremist alternative to an existing service, so instead of being the "free speech" variant, it's really where pedophiles and nazis go to scream about people they don't like, making itself utterly appalling to normal users who would stabilize the platform.

I'd like to attempt to make a free speech social media platform, but the sticking point is how to prevent it from just becoming an alternative hug box .

I like the idea of letting users vote to appeal moderator decisions, but that would only prevent mod take over --like Reddit suffers from. If the user base became polarized enough, nothing would help it.
There is of course also the issue that the initial demographics of the userbase will shape the websites image, and future; and if the website is simply presented as a free speech alternative to some other site, it will just get flooded by nu-nazis and other faggots. And who is going to want to join 'that circlejerk nazi site'?
Also I have no web development experience, but that's something else entirely.

Gab to me seems like a right wing version of some crazy commie troon mastodon/GNUSocial instance.

It doesn't help it's owner likes to make a scene on Twitter 24/7, or that they keep biting off more than they can chew every time they announce something as a reaction to "Tech company bans so and so", or that they announced a "pro" option that nobody is going to want to pay money for.

This is actually really good.

Some individuals with their own dislike of him helped out with some of the research, but nearly all the writing/wiki stuff is me, disregarding minor edits.

I do appreciate the compliment, and when I actually get motivation and enough of a grievance I can really get the caustic going per writing. I was informed by a third party at the time that Torba was trying to figure out who/why I was doing this, so it obviously must have had some impact.

I'm more annoyed that I dragged my feet on originally doing it while I was watching the hypetrain on this shit snowball.

The problem with all of those is that they're splinter sites and splinter sites always suck because they're filled with banned people or people who's opinions simply aren't wanted by the vast majority. It's the same reason that every dienull.lgbt is shit.

It's also an issue claiming to be a "free speech" website because that's putting out a banner that says nazis and pedos welcome. They all flock to the site and drive everyone else away because they're not actually interested in free speech, they just want a place to spout their shitty beliefs and they know a "free speech" website won't ban them.

If Jack Dorsey wasn't a cuck and actually believed in free speech then he wouldn't ban people for their political beliefs and Twitter wouldn't be such a shithole. A product would have to be created and develop organically with an owner that genuinely cared about free speech, but not necessarily designed as a platform for free speech. The second you say "Twitter, but with free speech" the only people you'll get are people that aren't wanted on twitter.
