Any thoughts on new rules, mainly the pitch clock/limiting pickoffs & banning the shift? I really hate the new extra innings rules and I think that is coming back too. I was ready to give up on baseball in 2020, the worst season ever, but last year got back into it. I at least wanted to follow the final years of future HOF guys like Verlander and Scherzer so hoping the pitching rule change doesn't wreck it for me.
Pitch clock: Going to be rough for a couple seasons until the guys who came up through the minors with the pitch clock start hitting the majors and the veterans retire. Once that happens I think it will improve the speed of pitching delivery.
Shift ban: I'm fairly okay with this but I think it might need some time to shake out the exact rules. Literally anything to get more balls in play instead of the HR/K/out ball we've been watching for 10 years.
Extra innings rule: Hate it and I'll go to my grave hating it. Fuck Manfred.

Who the fuck actually likes the new extra innings format? I thought that was supposed to be just for the truncated schedules and not permanent?

Anyone else stoked for the WBC? I can't wait to see the raw power of this year's Japanese team.
I did check out the WBC rosters. USA has the best lineup of veterans but Japan's rotation is tough with Darvish, Ohtani, and young phenom Sasaki.

With 76.3% of the vote, the Baseball Writers Association of America have finally elected Scott Rolen to the Hall of Fame.

An interesting trade happened the other day by the way:
  • the Marlins sent starter Pablo Lopez, their top infield prospect (Jose Salas) and their top outfield prospect (Bryan Chourio) to the Twins
  • Minnesota in return sent infielder and reigning AL batting champ Luis Arraez

Rolen strikes me as Hall of the Very Good caliber, but it's not a hill I am willing to die on that he will be in Cooperstown.

MLB is investigating potential domestic violence allegations vs Mike Clevinger, who was a free agent signing by the White Sox this winter.

Clevinger is buddies with Trevor Bauer, so that is not all that shocking. Maybe he's a bad guy, or maybe MLB wants to destroy these guys over some spicy vlogs.

Cleveland Indians superfan John Adams, who sat in the left field bleachers beating his bass drum at the stadium for nearly 50 years, has died.

"Indians"? Very problematic.

Getting Chris Bassitt for the rotation was a pretty decent move. Having a trio of Alek Manoah, Kevin Gausman and him is a nice look for their starters. Add in that if Jose Berrios' 2022 was just an anomaly then they look really good on paper on that front. That fifth starter spot doesn't look great though; right now it would be either Mitch White or Yusei Kikuchi or they might still try smashing their head against the wall to try to have Nate Pearson (who they should accept is too fragile and has all of the makings of a power arm out of the bullpen) as that guy.

Speaking of the bullpen, it looks pretty good. Jordan Romano is a good closer, Adam Cimber is underrated, Yimi Garcia is solid, Tim Mayza is a decent lefty, and Anthony Bass should regress but still be a good option. I wonder if they were in on Matt Moore (who just signed with the Angels the other day) at all because he'd have been a great addition as another lefty in my opinion. Trading for Erik Swanson looks like a good pickup and should be their setup man. The recent signing of former Yankee Chad Green could end up being a fantastic move and he's a good power arm that the needed.

The outfield is the iffy part of their team to me. George Springer is great, but he's on the wrong side of 30 and isn't known for his health. Lourdes Gurriel and Teoscar Hernandez no longer flank him so that's a lot of firepower off of the table; I'm not so sure that Daulton Varsho was worth trading their top prospect Gabriel Moreno (and Gurriel, but that was more of a salary/roster crunch thing,) but the fact that he's a lefty bat is something that Toronto needed and he's a really good defender with speed. Kevin Kiermaier, like Springer, is on the wrong side of 30 and if one is worried about Springer's health then Kiermaier should make you wince; despite this he should carry over good defense like he had in his tenure with Tampa Bay, but his offense will be an afterthought.

The infield looks great on paper. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doesn't really need to be discussed much. Getting that recent deal with Bo Bichette to buy out his arbitration years looks great for both sides. The catching situation is one of the best in the league between Alejandro Kirk and Danny Jansen. Matt Chapman is a vacuum at third base and a solid hitter with a lot of pop. The trio of Whit Merrifield, Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio look good to play second base while the former and latter can play a bit of everywhere. Brandon Belt was an okay singing to back up Guerrero and he'll probably DH on most days when facing a righty.

Overall I'd say that their Opening Day roster is probably a B+.

Their prospects are looking pretty good in terms of higher end talent. Their top guy, lefty starter Ricky Tiedemann, looks like he's going to be a monster and will probably find himself on a leaguewide top 10 list sooner or later. Orelvis Martinez will probably make his MLB debut this season as a middle infielder and my prediction is that it'll be Cavan Biggio that's bumped off of the roster in some way.

Welcome to the new age of baseball. Red Sox spring training opener is decided as a tie after a pitch clock violation strikeout in a two out, bases loaded, full count bottom of the ninth. Though it's only a spring training game, the fact that game 1 the pitch clock has already been a deciding factor is worrying - I'm going to be pissed if a playoff game is decided by an automatic strike.

Wonder if he will change his mind. Here a double play is wiped off the board because Max's pitch is released a second too late and the Nationals go on to score 8 in the inning.

I get it that rules and things change, there used to be no overhand pitching, no gloves, no helmets, no lights, no DH, but I can't stand this. I'm done.
