I never really understood the concept of going on a social media website, and proceeding to use blocklists to block people you've never even interacted with. That holds a dangerous precedent. Who makes these blocklists, and by what metric? Who gets preemptively put on these? Are they serial harassers, or did they have the wrong opinion at some point. Hell, maybe they have the wrong PFP. Or the wrong bio.

It's very weird and doesn't reflect how reality works. You're creating a very limited virtual world for yourself while interacting with the real world less and less. Then when you go out in the real world and see people not holding the same warped expectation for reality, you're gonna be left feeling pretty alienated.

They kinda-sorta have this already, although they aren't given out by Bluesky admins. It's another user-curated thing, similar to blocklists.

They're called Labelers, and they can be used to apply both "good" and "bad" labels to other users. You have to subscribe to the Labeler to actually see the labels, though.

I vaguely remember Elon Musk complaining once that excessively large blocklists were causing technical problems for Twitter (especially when nutjobs like Alejandra Caraballo subscribe to multiple huge blocklists to block literally hundreds of thousands of accounts). And as we've seen, people on Bluesky absolutely love using & abusing blocklists, labelers, and curated feeds via Bluesky's "Lists" feature.

The whole story for those with popcorn:

That particular morning on my feed I'd seen many posts from one account in particular belonging to a totally SFW cosplayer with just a handful of public photos and no content of any sort being offered otherwise aggressively demanding funds and preemptively berating both no one in particular and anyone who stumbled across them for not sending money. They were all variations of "I'M NOT FUCKING ASKING, SEND ME $$ RIGHT FUCKING NOW", "FUCK EVERYONE HERE WHERE THE FUCK IS MY MONEY?", or something similar.

The sex worker I had attempted to deliver a compliment, who I will not name, immediately started cussing me out for a) not having tipped her myself and b) putting down sex workers on their feed. I explained the unhinged and extremely entitled account (although I chose my words more carefully than that at this point) was not from a sex worker at all - they weren't offering anything of any sort and were making demands without even specifying what the money was for. I noted that I followed her (the SW I had replied to) more or less exclusively to pass along her mutual aid requests, and that I am not a consumer of lewd content but a creator of it myself.

They demanded I provide the name of the account posting the aggressive demands, which I did not feel comfortable doing since it was not my goal to have them burned at the stake. They posted on her feed asking if anyone had seen the person I was describing. Then they said something really, really mean to me - I don't even remember what, just that I was furious - and I responded telling her they was being really rude in response to what was intended as a compliment, expressed that I felt like I was being tormented by a highschool bully, and finished with something like. "I'm sorry, but I've been pushed around this way too much IRL to have it happen online without at least calling out the behavior."

The next thing I knew I was blocked, and then suddenly -lots- of other accounts had me blocked. I knew it was something they'd done, but wasn't sure if they'd just asked her followers to block me or what. They're a pretty popular SW from what I had seen, so that seemed possible. It turns out they actually submitted me to a Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist and Sex Worker Exclusionary Radical Feminist block list, despite me being a lewd content creator who is hoping to eventually monetize after building some kind of following (which is of course now very difficult to do) and a trans woman myself.

It really shouldn't need saying, but simply disagreeing with the principle of aggressive, derogatory DEMANDS for money (in this case not coming from a SWer at all, though I don't really think it should matter who they are coming from if they're totally unreasonable) is not the same thing as being a SWERF. Neither is defending yourself from from a SWer who is attacking you in their comments. Frankly, although I believe it is important to be supportive of sex workers, not being very supportive is still not the same thing as being a SWERF. The only thing that should label someone as a SWERF is being fundamentally against sex work.

I don't know if what he is saying is 100% true since he's only blocked by 30 or so users and doesn't seem to belong to any SWERF blocklist anymore according to Clearsky. Another complain I've seen brought up frequently is the fact that a lot of the block lists also include people whose only sin is following or interacting with other users accused of wrong-think, regardless on the time or circumstances of said interactions. People randomly find themselves in block lists because they follow some literally who account that said something uncomfortable long after they followed them, or because things move so fast in slacktivist circles that certain postures age extremely quickly. All of this without any form of information or warning, and with the only real transparency being brought by a third-party app. One day you follow a webcomic artist because you find something funny, months later they unknowingly post a stonetoss edit without malice and your account is suddenly branded with a scarlet letter (probably a capital N). Fitting the platform's logo, a butterfly effect of sorts.
Once people realize how easily weaponized this guilt-by-association bullshit truly is, we are going to see a lot of salt flowing.

Blocklists were on Xitter except the data wasn't public like Bluesky and the unofficial apps on Twitter to see if someone was on a blocklist weren't reliable. People could share blocklist with others manually. Clearsky service has gone down frequently lately but Bluesky is very transparent about what is public and unencrypted.
