Going to explain the economy as I see it. I could be completely and utterly wrong. I don't want to be a Chipman and talk out of my ass when I don't know shit. So, again, just my layman understanding:

I actually think he's onto something in that a lot of the money circulating in the economy is essentially fake. When you work on a fiat currency system, its value is based primarily on speculation rather than a tangible good like gold or silver. Much of the money doesn't represent an actual valuable resource in the real world, but just an arbitrary value based on pure speculation. Combine that with the fact that much of that value is from assets, loans, debts and other non-tangible factors, and you can genuinely have situations where someone has millions on paper but practically no physical capital of any kind.

The problem is, all that "fake" money can be used to buy real goods and services. A bunch of theoretical dollars can be converted into a hoard of gold and silver. So for the system to not fall apart, you need a lot of real resources being produced so that people still have plenty of goods, and the currency doesn't rapidly degrade in value due to sheer volume -- IE, Stagflation. It leads to a "Top Down" economy where the rich live comfortably but everyone else goes broke. Which you see a lot in South America.

Theoretically, this should also mean that every "fake" dollar you take out of the economy, the more valuable goods and services become. Tax dollars can be sent to infrastructure programs and other things that actually create value for average Americans, rather than inflating the networth of politicians and executives through government pork.

According to the St. Louis Federal reserve, the United States M2 money supply (that is, all the paper money in circulation, plus money held in savings accounts and traveler's checks, plus money held in short-term assets that mature in less than 1 year) is $21.5 trillion as of January 2025. According to US Debt Clock, as of this post the United States national debt is $36.6 trillion. In other words, even if the US government confiscated all assets and put them to paying down the debt, we'd still be $15.1 trillion in debt- almost the economic equivalent of China, and greater than any other three nations' GDPs combined. This cannot be solved by simply taxing the rich, as Bob and friends would have us do.
