Possibly July is a grifter to end all grifters OR some commissar of goodthinkfulness in the employ of PayPal is in fact fucking with his campaign.

The frustrating thing is that I can see either case as being correct at this point. The whole crowdfunding of comics business reeks of scuminess (both inside and outside CG), but some of the people Big Tech employs -- and what they're allowed to do -- just takes my breath away.

How could somebody be fucking with his campaign? They're holding the funds of a presale until product is shipped or delivered. This is standard for them. Why does July expect or deserve special treatment?

This problem shouldn't even be worthy of public complaint. Paypal sales only account for 1/3 of his claimed total sales so far so if the numbers are correct he should have way more than enough money available to do the second printing needed to fulfill it all.

When PayPal has a history of fucking with people and companies like this seem to apply their TOS randomly at best and maliciously at worst, I can see getting pissed off at them and assuming the worst, especially if they've screwed around with you previously. Lessons about them should have been learned ages ago and everyone should be prepared for this kind of thing rather than being blindsided by it.

That said, this tantrum over it is equally overblown and is not the good look he seems to think it is. As you pointed out, they straight up say "We can fuck with your money if we feel like it and here's a way we justified it" so, yes, he should stop acting surprised. If he felt the need to make a statement at all it should have been "This happened, I have a legal team ensuring that everything will be fine and the funds will be released properly pertaining to their TOS" instead of whatever this shit show he's starting up is. Quietly resolve the issue, go off on them AFTER you have the money and they can't dig through their TOS to find further ways to fuck with you, and then stop using them.

There's a saying "Don't shit where you eat" - He may not be planning to use PayPal again, but he should at least finish his meal, as it were, before flipping the table and storming out.
