You have to remember the time period, though. Remember when this happened.View attachment 6355955
Anti-SJW centrists and gamergate nerds would like to make you believe that video game outlets only became liberal and political after 2013, this is from a 2009 issue of Ngamer. I have also seen feminism in a 2008 iussue of ONM. Not only do they imply that right wingers must be silenced but also that anything right wing is stupid and wrong. Granted it is popular to attack right wingers much like it is popular to trash Christianity.
Jack Thompson had just been disbarred a year before after being a giant pain in the ass for a fucking decade. Groups like the AFA were responsible for over 99% of complaints to the FCC until like 2010. You had the Video Game Decency Act pushed by Repubs of the time. And this was all over the backdrop of the Moral Majority goons of the 90s and the bevy of bullshit they pulled. I'll spare you the details, since I've gone over them in like 20 other threads by this point, but the short version is that the worst elements of the right were more than happy to play up to their role and act exactly as retarded as your average leftist activist in our current era.
And their doing so allowed the leftist establishment to push sweeping authoritarian measures in the background.
They were useful idiots, drawing aggro and ultimately being left holding the bag when these efforts stalled out at the time.
To give an example: while Thomspon was prattling about like an idiot, it was Hillary Clinton who pushed FEPA (Family Entertainment Protection Act) behind the scenes, which would have mandated Federal ESRB enforcement with penalties akin to selling cigarettes to minors and would have placed the ESRB under the mandate of the FTC. This would have been effectively a federal implementation of similar laws that had already been passed and by this point, already ruled unconstitutional and overturned in Illinois, California, and Michigan.
You can't really blame the uninvolved normies for not knowing this shit - do you think your average person tunes into congressional proceedings? Maybe they should have, considering that some of that shit was hilarious, but the majority of people kept only a surface level understanding, and you really can't blame them for that given context. The Dems counted on that, and the dumber elements of the right who happily played up to it deserve nothing but fucking scorn.
