I know I should probably be saying something more, maybe some halfassed analysis or some discussion but... just seriously... I don't know how to react to something like this.

I dunno, the disconnect is just really jarring to me. The sad thing is that that webcomic above is actually... kinda sorta interesting? I mean, all things considered, if the artwork was cleaned up a bit and it wasn't featuring a bunch of, I say again, fucking cartoon animals then it'd be the kind of thing I actually might be kinda interested in.

I actually disagree with the sentiment that the characters being cartoon animals means that they can't do any deep stories, Blacksad and EndTown are great. I think it's because Dave is just shit.

I took the liberty of ripping that archive and sifting through it. Luckily I have quite a strong stomach for this crap.

I went specifically hunting for anything "out of place", in that I was looking for things that weren't a) one of his comics, b) straight-up porn, c) gratuitously violent, or d) a drawing of one of his shitty characters standing. Granted, 80% or so of this archive consists of the latter. A lot of these comics are just his character killing someone while copy/pasting the lyrics of a song. The "Comfortably Numb" one was especially retarded.

I remember encountering his work, Rework the Dead, back in my old days chronicling David Gonterman. Rework the Dead was, at the time, the single most fucked-up comic I had ever encountered online, with literally nothing redeemable about it - atrocious artwork, poor characterization, and a concept that seemed to be hewn from an unsound mind. It was my single most disturbing comic I ever encountered, until I discovered that-which-must-not-be-mentioned, which, to put it simply, was a fuck-mothering snuff-porn comic.

It single-handedly reminded me of why I love chronicling David Gonterman - because as often as he's backslid back into lolcowery, as often as his ideas are completely asinine, they're redeemed by virtue of being completely hilarious.

Color me completely not suprised that he's infinitely more fucked up than even I suspected.

I found Rework the Dead from the MSTron back in the day, and I remember it being nigh-unreadible. Garish MS Paint colors, text that looked like it was written by somebody who barely spoke English, military wank, rip-offs of movies that were way better... Jesus, it was a mess. For those who think Jack is bad, Rework is way, way worse. Dave actually improved a lot once he started Jack.

Allow that to sink in when you re-read the first few issues of Jack. Jack was a massive improvement over Rework the Dead.

Sabrina Online at least had cute drawings, even if they were pretty much rip-offs of Animaniacs designs. Eric Schwartz had so much potential but he got stuck in the furry fetish niche. That seems to happen a lot with a lot of furry webcomic creators. They find an audience and they either go insane or they stay in a rut because they want to keep that audience.

"Wasted potential" seems to be the theme of a lot of bad furry webcomics I keep tabs on.

If I'm remembering correctly Jack and his gf Jill were created by humans but they were born without reproductive organs, so Jack killed a bunch of people and that's why he's the grim reaper. gf died and hoomans created more furries until all the people died out forever. This might all be bullshit because I stopped reading Jack about the time sloth was introduced.

Yeah, I worded that poorly. There is potential in using things like cartoon animals to telling some type of deep or gritty story, but the type of style Jack uses... just doesn't work, in my honest opinion.
