Discussion of Discord Alternatives - We're stuck here.

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
For simple direct chats, you still have XMPP, but again, it's XMPP. Decentralized, so you now need to figure out which server to register on, which client to use and so on. Even more complicated than Mumble where you'd do the heavy lifting of hosting an instance, then sharing a URL for people to join.
Gajim and Conversations allows one to register directly from the interface, with a list of well-thought-out providers to choose from, some of which are as old or older than the proprietary platforms that have been discussed in this thread. The provider, whereon I've registered, predates Slack and Discord, being only slightly younger than Skype. Choosing a provider is a choice that only needs to be made once and then never again.

Gajim is the reliable graphical client that, for most people, is the only client that should be used on a desktop, as it is actively being developed and is well compatible with the XMPP protocol. Its interface should feel familiar to Discord exiles.

Teamspeak released the beta of TS6 with similar screensharing features, but with the very big catch that there are no server binaries available currently.
Its like Teamspeak employees hate success.
They avoided adding persistant chat and screen sharing for years and years and years because it "wasnt in the spirit of teamspeak" then they finally do, but without the ability ro actually host a server, which was the only thing they had over discord.

It is 2025 and IRCv3 has been unfinished for 21 years with no significant work in the past two, Skype’s near dead, Matrix is israeliware, Tox is fucking dead, everything else is either “store brand Discord” or “store brand corporate Discord” and Discord itself is about to fall down the shareholder pit. Everything’s fucked.

Could be some kind of influx of autistic Geometry Dash players to platforms like Revolt, as many of them (including the game's creator) have recently gotten automatically suspended from Discord for talking about the game's "creator points".

To use Discord, you use an e-mail, a password
and a non-VOIP phone number (which also blacklists 99% of poorfag phone carriers because discord is made by neurotic trannies)
and soon your ID and facial scan.

Mumble is very convoluted compared to Discord. You have to install a client, you need to get a server URL, then most likely enter a password to the server since ACL's aren't as effective when it comes to gatekeeping, then you need your ACL's to be set up by the admin and then you need to figure out it's interface that's not very intuitive compared to Discord
yes I too can phrase something in a way that makes it sound needlessly complicated:

You have to install a client
you need to download something and open it
, you need to get a server URL,
you need to copy and paste a url (which is functionally no different from a web browser)
then most likely enter a password to the server
every retard who has ever used the capital I internet ever has done this.
nce ACL's aren't as effective when it comes to gatekeeping, then you need your ACL's to be set up by the admin and then you need to figure out it's interface that's not very intuitive compared to Discord
ACL = rule list, like what channels people can join. in most cases you can just right click on a channel as admin and set whatever you want.

f the alternative is more convoluted than that, it'll fail.
if someone is too fucking stupid to figure out how to download something and copy and paste a link then they aren't even worth talking to. SORRY!

[Matrix is Electron based bloatshit]
nobody is forcing you to use the element client
and a non-VOIP phone number
evading phonelocking on trooncord is like 10x easier than evading phonelocking on gmail though, you just have to turn your router off and on again, install a new web browser, make sure you use a mainstream e-mail service, and minimize the frequency at which you send friend requests and join servers.

If you're gonna use a light theme you should use the classic with the lips and sovlfvl icons.

No one brought up Steam group chats?
Moderation tools are nonexistent but it does the job for friend gatherings
It's also funny to think Steam broadcasting did screen sharing before anyone else and no one ended up using it because the feature is kind of convoluted

You can host a TS3 server and TS6 clients can still join and do everything besides screensharing, it's clear however that they're being huge kikes with the rent-a-server bullshit and will never release new server binaries. Also iirc the TS6 client forces you to have a myTeamspeak account even if you're only going to join self hosted servers, reason being "the client is still a beta so we need you to sign up :)"
It's infuriating.
