Surgeons in India successfully removed what they think is the largest brain tumor in record, weighing in at 4 pounds.

Ever since he was the age of one, Santlal Pal lived with swelling of the scalp, heaviness, headaches and poor vision in both eyes.

Leading up to surgery, scans revealed the tumor had invaded the brain on both sides of the midline through his skull bone. The patient's scalp had swelled up so much, he appeared as if he had two heads.

"Such large tumors are rare and are a surgical challenge,” Dr. Trimurti Nadkarni, the lead surgeon, told news service SWNS.

During the seven-hour surgery, doctors removed the massive tumor along with skull bone which had moved into the brain.

The cloth seller, who is 31 years old, has made a remarkable recovery following a transfusion of 11 units of blood and three days on life support.

"There was a heavy blood loss and this required great team skill in perioperative monitoring for a successful result," Nadkarni said.

He also told the International Business Times that his team checked all the available medical texts and did not find any tumor as big as this.

“In fact, the tumor was much bigger than his own head,” he noted.

The surgeon said that he had removed a tumor that weighed 1.4 kg (3.08 pounds) from a patient in 2002.

Nadkarni was pleased with the outcome of the new case.

"The patient has made good recovery and is now ambulatory and on full diet," he said. "He feels relieved of a large burden on his head.”

For reference here's a picture from the article of the man with the tumor:

Wow. I know there's going to be a huge share of designated shitting jokes, et cetera, but before they really get started in earnest, this is so incredible. Neurosurgeons who remove tumors are amazingly talented and we're lucky to live in an era where this is possible.

Imagine getting the call after a year, two years, five years telling you that the "inoperable" tumor you'd always thought would cause the early, tortured death of you or someone you loved, was something they think they can handle now, due to advancements in medical science. Imagine being the person who's dedicated so much time and energy into thinking about these issues that you can make a call to a really sick person, and give an entire family the hope they've felt shrinking away for months or years.

I just wanted to take a minute to remember that this is a human being with people who care for him, and a team of surgeons who are honest-to-god real fucking life heroes whose daily job involves doing more good than a lot of us on these forums will ever do in our lives.

And now that we've gotten past that, please carry on making fun of his silly figure-8 shaped head.

Why are most of these crazy tumors in India?
  • Inbreeding
  • Poor healthcare for those not in certain social classes or wealth brackets
  • River ganges and varanasi are disgustingly filth ridden despite being holy rivers.
  • People swim and bathe in said rivers regularly, age doesn't matter.
  • Birth defects are generally considered the result of being touched by divinity or some hogwash.
  • Cow worship doesn't lend itself very well to sanitation when they can piss and shit wherever they damn well please.
  • Rolling toddlers around in cow feces to boost their immune system.
  • Open defecation.
Take your pick.

I’m amazed the guy has lived this long with that tumor. I would’ve figured it would cut off the blood supply to something important, or been cancerous and spread throughout the body, or been so completely enmeshed with the brain that operating to remove it would’ve left him a vegetable.

Medical science really is fascinating. I've always been amazed at how completely and utterly the human body can go wrong -- from everything strange and unpleasant that can happen to a developing baby in the womb, to every bizarre thing that can be inflicted on it after birth. He had this thing growing out of his head since he was a year old. It's almost hard to wrap my head around how someone can have such an enormous tumor just sticking out of their damn head like that.
Things like this are both incredible, and absolutely disgusting. Nice to hear he's making a good recovery -- I can only imagine how relieving it would feel to finally have that weight chopped off.

Also the use of all kinds of chemicals that are banned in richer parts of the world, like extremely deadly pesticides and mutation-causing herbicides.

Also all the bonkers, insane abuse the human body can endure.

Sidebar, but this is why I hate when hipsters insist on solar panels, wind turbines (which need permanent magnets, unlike regular generators) and battery storage and all this "green" shit. These are all made in out of the way shitholes because the pollutants and byproducts of their manufacture are so fucking toxic only countries like India and China will touch them.
So yeah, finger wagging Melbourne hipster cunt, your prius might use less fuel than my Outback but my Outback didn't cause a baby to be born with brain-tumours for eyes in some Chinese village.
