DOOM

People were already shitting on id because they released a really shoddy product.
As they should.
No? People were singing Doom Eternal's (and subsequently, id's) praises initially. The Denuvo implementation was the first real case of controversy with the game, but most people seemed to forget about that over time after it got patched back out, despite the real bitchy, official response given to the fan backlash. The shitting of Doom Eternal didn't pick back up until the initial Mick controversy reared its ugly head, and even that died out after some time.

I was talking about the OST. People were absolutely shitting on it and pointing out how bad it was mixed.

Which... It was. But people were also reviewbombing the game itself around the same time, which is I imagine most people would think of first when it comes to subjects of "reviewbombing" and "Doom Eternal", because this was when the initial stuff about Mick Gordon and his complicated tangle with his work on Doom Eternal came to light.

As far as I know it got review bombed because they added Denuvo in the update.

No? The Denuvo stuff and the start of the Mick stuff were fairly far apart from each other in incidence, and the Denuvo BS got resolved and removed before the soundtrack controversy popped up.

The soundtrack was released on April 19th, the Reddit post on May 4th, and the patch with Denuvo was May 14th.
It happened shortly after not before.

Oh look, another gaming controversy where the latest person to issue a 'take' is the 'correct' person and we must take their opinion as 100% gospel. I cannot wait for the Marty post in about a week which disputes these claims that is seen as the brand new truth, kinda like the whiplash we had over the Bayonetta 3 controversy.

I guess I'm retarded and shifted timelines or something because I remembered events happening in a different order.

I think I'm still disoriented by all the bullshit on that front because I've been getting some serious deja vu from seeing the Mick drama becoming relevant once again. Everyone saying a lot of the same things they said back then as well.

What is it about studios having universally praised composers and shitting all over them? Both Mick Gordon and Martin O'Donnell got blacklisted by the entertainment industry for not accepting being treated like garbage. You would think studios would realize these people are household names and that they will garner a lot of ill will if they just throw them unto the landfill

Mick is working on Atomic Heart and I believe one other game so I'm not sure he's exactly having issues finding other work. Hell the main people he's worked for were Microsoft (Killer Instinct) and Bethesda (Wolfenstein, Doom, Prey) so it seems more like he's just had falling outs with his two main employers than a reddit post making him unable to find work. Would be sad if he didn't end up working on the rumored Killer Instinct game in development, especially if it turns out ArcSys actually is making it since a joint Daisuke Ishiwatari/Mick Gordon soundtrack would be kino.

Bethesda claimed to have receipts in what feels like a veiled legal threat. Terrible response. No Energy. I was hoping for some real fireworks and all I got was s fucking jpg. Guess I have no choice but to side with Mick 100% now.

Well where's the receipt then, Bethesda?

Or is this another "see you in court" thing and we'll only find out in Year 2 of some bugshit trial during discovery

So Mick types up an extremely detailed report with proof, evidence, screenshots, etc. Bethesda responds by basically going "He's wrong, trust us bro". Well, I'm convinced.

Provide the evidence or fuck off. Their "incited harassment" thing also falls flat since they did the exact same thing to Mick first.

Horrible response.

Going through all of your human assets like toilet paper is just a corporate thing. Doesn't matter if they're skilled labor or not; if some bean counter thinks it will make the red line go up, then they're getting shafted.

Well it's been a week - you would have had a point if Bethesda had posted... any evidence at all.

Also notice bethesda's incredibly pathetic response where at no point do they say he lied. Just it's "one sided" and "unjust." Know what's missing from that cry-bully post? The words lie or untruthful. It's a paragraph of weasel words that dance around the fact that they aren't saying Mick is lying. They aren't saying they never offered him a contract for the OST until it was too late. They aren't saying anything he said wasn't true. No, pay attention - they're calling it a distortion of the truth. In other words, Mick isn't lying and they're seething.

Also they accuse him of going after the entire team. I read Mick's entire fucking billion page 'FUCK YOU MARTY' explanation and at several points he praises id software, the people he worked with, and pretty much everyone BUT MARTY AND CHAD. He goes out of his way to say that Marty did this, and that most of the people he worked with were great. He did not have to do this, but he did. Despite chad being a massive piece of shit as well, his main issue with him (aside from the shit song quality) is Chad stealing credit for songs he didn't write.

If Bethesda actually has evidence lets see it. I just see corporate malding and an overly long 'no u' from people who got caught being shitheads.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't see many receipts from Mick either. From what I recall of the post most of the pictures were of article headlines or twitter posts with some being screenshots of his PC regarding his work on the music. There were like three or four shots of emails from Marty and two of them had tons of it blacked out with Marty's actual words being something like "sure, go ahead" in regards to something that Mick was requesting. Maybe they were in the copious inline links, I didn't really have the desire to go through all of them. I'll say this, unlike the Bayonetta shit Mick did this without any obvious financial gain and he at least had more than a twitter thread.

If Mick wasn't blackballed by the entire AAA game industry before, he certainly is now. His post has a very "yeah I don't give a fuck about working in this industry anymore" vibe. (More fool to Mick if he expected otherwise).

Don't think Mick had much of a choice whether he'd work in industry anymore, if his reputation damage is to be believed. Might as well burn it down at that point.

Mick made a lot of specific statements of fact though. If they're false he can easily get sued over them.

It sounds like his foray into the indie market is going well(e.g. Atomic Heart), so maybe he views dealing with megacorps as more trouble than it's worth. I don't doubt he can still get work, but moving forward he's going to have to be smart about risk assessment. Indie games are hit or miss and he'll do himself no favors attaching his name to shovelware titles.
