My issue with most of the suggestions is that they're too long. "Dox" is just short for "documents" as far as I know. 411 is the only one that's snappy.

I'm still used to the term "doxxing" with revealing personal information on the Internet that was not public knowledge. I'm partial to "unmasking" or "sunshining" as an official term.

The fact that this subculture invented the term and abides within the law is irrelevant to what the average person now thinks of when they hear "doxing". That we are 'in the right' does not matter. The use of a word, which now describes a crime, to describe things which are not criminal, is detrimental to our interests and long-term prospects.

In 2025 I need the community at large to stop using the word "doxing" to describe legal information gathering and switch to anything else. The following terms have been suggested, including both verbs which describe the act of looking something up, and the noun which describes a compilation of this information.

Doxbin community faggots and their entire subculture are primarily to blame for this general view of doxing IMO.

KF was blamed and therefore targeted for things Doxbin - specifically the group ViLE - ran by @katy (https://kiwifarms.st/members/katy.85896/) did for clout, these guys literally hijacked law enforcement email accounts for their faggy clout wars, now two of them are in prison for hijacking a DEA portal.

More importantly, the information that ViLE procures is not through legal channels, like virtual phone books or self admission. Instead, members of ViLE used fake Emergency Data Requests (archive) to impersonate government officials (archive), used stolen passwords of law enforcement officers to subpoena companies (archive) into sharing private user information. Allegedly, they also extort the trannies that they dox (archive), which is illegal regardless of how the information was gathered. This is only known because two members were arrested and charged by federal law enforcement (archive). Three other members are still unknown. As of 2023, they are inactive.

Their Doxbin shows they were quite brazen about their crimes. The original doxes for Liz Fong-Jones, Keffals, and DIYHRT all link back to the same group of trolls in ViLE. However, their actions were blamed on Kiwifarms, as this website is the largest target for people like Liz Fong-Jones.

They also have a video of them breaking into what is implied to be a lolcow's home on their website (archive), along with all the links proudly exhibiting their crimes. And of course, they are weeaboos.

This is how doxing became something tied to some gay criminal subculture rather than the morally justified and legal process of information posting

Way back in the day when word "dox" didn't exist in internet slang, anons of old dumped info of various attention whores, felons, sex pests and internet tough guys way back in Early 2000 many infodumps were made

In the last year especially, the word doxing has become popularly realigned from the second definition (which originated online in the 2000s) to the first (which was popularized by journos).

Considering they see the latter a form of the former it's not surprising that the original meaning got overriden.

It's a good idea since there are movements into the political and legal sphere, but it 's still a pity.
