This presents a problem. For a civilized society to exist, all children must be rigorously educated starting at a very young age -- however, children do not give a shit and are notoriously averse to being taught anything except how to tower quickly in Fortnite. Children left to their own devices are also notoriously cruel, violent, destructive, and stupid. Thankfully, society has found its solution to the problem of civilizing kids who absolutely do not want to be civilized.
That solution is to require kids, first and foremost, to shut the fuck up and do as the adults tell them.
Obedience is one of the earliest skills that every child is taught. At about the same time that you learned how to shit in the toilet, you learned how to listen to the grown-ups when they told you that if you ever shat anywhere else ever again you were facing some serious consequences. You learned to eat what was on your plate, to not fish around in the kitchen drawers, to shut up when you were told to, to go to bed at eight o'clock, to do exactly as you were told in every instance or face punishment. When you went off to school it became more of the same, only there were far more rules to follow and far more grown-ups to obey this time around -- and the more important the grown-up, the more important it was that you did exactly as they commanded you no matter how strange or nonsensical their commands or actions seemed. And you grew, so did your strength, loudness, speed, energy, and cunning -- so it became all the more important that you be easily controlled so as to prevent something ghastly from occurring. In particular, you were conditioned to a near-Pavlovian degree to shut down when school officials, cops, priests and other such authority figures were talking to you. You remember, full well, what it was like to be "in big trouble."
Overdisciplining every last bit of free will, autonomy, and creativity out of a child can happen and is a problem. There's a happy medium between letting kids grow up into barbarians and indoctrinating them into mindless sheep. But that's not the point that I'm getting at. The point I'm getting at is that when children interact with adults, the adult has enormous power over the child's mind whether he chooses to wield it or not. Society teaches kids to obey their elders unconditionally, and this is a good thing as long as the elders in question do not abuse the power they are granted over the young.
This is why the law flat-out states that children are incapable of consenting to sex with adults. It's not just that it's depraved, it's not just that it's immoral, it's not just that it's dangerous, it's not just that it permanently damages the child's psyche -- it's because if an adult tells a child to submit to a sex act, the child will do so automatically not because he wants to, BUT BECAUSE THE ADULT FUCKING TOLD HIM TO. That's before you even get into the mind games that child predators and shit will play to manipulate and corrupt children's minds. Without going too deep into powerlevel, I am very personally aware of what a pedophile can do to convince an impressionable teenager who's trying to stay out of trouble that he needs to go out of his way, again and again, to offer himself up to appease the pedophile's sick urges.
Age of consent attempts to address this power/authority gap by setting a an absolute minimum age at which an older person can have sex with a younger person without the act being automatically punishable as rape. It's not a perfect solution to the problem -- if anything, the 18-year age of consent might be too low because human minds are still not yet fully developed at that point and college kids still have very little autonomy. I lack the knowledge to determine that. But given how young people's minds work -- especially how their minds work in the presence of older people, whether they're being ordered to do things or simply manipulated into doing them -- adults should never, ever, ever try to get sex out of kids. Even in the situations where sexual interactions with adults and children are not outright illegal (such as when local age-of-consent laws are messed up), they are harmful and depraved to the worst possible degree.
