First of all, it's a
Dutch colony. The Anglo oriented western world generally dont have much interest in a non-British post-colonial state, unlike Phillipines or Singapore/Malaysia/HK. Aussies and NZ may know us but their compared population are too tiny to spread the good word and interest of more prominent western state like US and UkK in the east are generally limited to potential threat. Interest of the west like it has now toward modern Japan and SK are unheard of and is the exception rather than the norm, both have its own history why they are able to have their level of clout, and Indonesia simply arent a country like them
Secondly, it has no real war to make it to the front page of the news. With exception of border conflict against Malaysia, The Netherlands, and occupation of East Timor, of which most were short and back in 1950s anyway, most of Indonesian modern conflict is
internal agaisnt separatism and never get out of control, both military and media wise. It simply aint Vietnam, Palestina, or India and Pakistan.
Lastly, the country is simply too stable. Especially during the cold war, indonesia is seen as bulwark ally against communism that unlike Thailand, have no problem getting couped every 5 minutes. The economy of Indonesia is growing relatively stable and there's no mass starvation like China with their retarded great leap or Bangladesh famine. Stable country dont make it to the news.
In the end, among more....epistemic sort of group, Indonesia may have more prominance, but the relatively spotless record didnt help the state to attain clout on the general overseas public.
