How did we get to the point in Western society where a writer/artist etc. cannot portray characters who are ethnically or culturally different from themselves?

We didn't really. A bunch of shrieking 600 pound trannies with bright purple hair don't get to dictate shit. It was a mistake ever to pay attention to them in the first place.

I have to wonder if this show was made in the 90s, would there be as much bitching or would people have a thicker skin.

There was an episode of Sliders where they go to a world where slavery never ended. Remy gets picked up as an escapee and is imprisoned with an old man who was born a slave. I think they handled it very well. There's also an episode where they spend a short amount of time in a world where all the women have facial hair. Now that would have been praised heavily if it were new today. Although the male characters reactions were far from positive. They were pretty freaked out. That would have caused a triggering.

I really hate how over sensitive people are. Especially because it really does hurt the ability to create anything now. You can't have an idea out there without someone crying that they feel offended or it is too white and straight. Years ago you could do more on TV with less criticism. I think an entire series about slavery still going on would draw some criticism, but you'd get far less REEEEing and people might be more open to having an intelligent dialog about it.

Here's the intelligent dialog you can have in [~current year~]

On the other hand, some alt-righters hate this because they think it's written by Jews for their nefarious purposes.

Agreed.

The "Nazis win WW2, but heroic resistance still determined to take them down" is a trope because very few people have a problem with declaring Nazis worthy of a bullet.... it's one of the few remaining groups you can cast as villains in your work and not get much hate mail when they get shot/stabbed/immolated.
That seems to be the exact history going on for the new Wolfeinstein game.

Bonus for that game for portraying a witch that looks like Hillary.

Tbh I think part of why this series is coming out now is to ride the coattails of The Man in the High Castle. Last I knew Man in the High Castle was super popular so I can see why competitor would want to put out a vaguely similar show.

I still cannot understand the mentality of thinking that because something is wrong IRL people shouldn't portray it in fiction.

God, these people don't even know what they're complaining about.

They even did an episode where women were the dominant sex. The main lesson taken from that episode is that nothing would change and get this, women can be just as awful as men. Try making something like that today. Sliders is hilariously unrealistic, but the episodes usually try to prove a point. I'm expecting this show to do the same.

As a stupid and naive islander, I'm at the point where I kinda want to know what the present could be like with the Confederacy still around, so I welcome this show and will probably watch it.

That said, I sympathize with why people of color would be offended by the idea but its better to realize the broader picture.

I also really want to see the Man in the High Castle now. I guess I'm just a sucker for alternate history of our world.

HBO President of programming has addressed the "controversy":

File this under hindsight is 20-20, Our mistake — HBO’s mistake, not the producers — was the idea that we would be able to announce an idea that is so sensitive and requires such care and thought on the part of the producers in a press release was misguided on our part.

Richard [Plepler, CEO of HBO] and I had the benefit of sitting with these four producers. We heard why they wanted to do the show, what they were excited about. So we had that context. But I completely understand why somebody reading the press release wouldn’t have that.

The producers have said they’re not looking to do ‘Gone With the Wind’ 2017′. It’s not whips and plantations. It’s what they imagine a modern day institution of slavery would look like.

Let's bring back slavery and enslave all the (white) people crying that this show is racist to black people.

Anyone who portrayal of an idea is endorsement of that idea is a gigantic fucking retard. I can't imagine being so fucking delusional.
