What are some times you were right and everyone else was wrong?

It can be a small personal thing, or predicting some major event. It doesn't have to be lolcow related, but it can be.

Since I need something to start the thread, I guess I'll go with an oldie. I hated Extra Credits before it was cool. They were a group of video game pundits, with their authority coming from claims they worked in the video game industry. I tried to tell people they were full of shit early on. From saying that games should be more expensive, to saying that we were going to run out of wifi by 2016. In the end, it was an episode that said playing World War 2 games made you a nazi in real life that destroyed their credibility.

What are your stories?

how about the opposite? times you were confidently wrong about something and got humbled?

for me, i expected that trump would lose to kamala in 2024. seeing the actual election outcome put me in a mental burger suit.

I was with three other guys (two old guys and one my age), delivering a sailboat to Los Angeles, sailing it down from San Francisco. They started up the diesel to get us out of the marina and I said I didn't think anyone had checked the fluids. They all assured me that was taken care of, and even chuckled like it was the most basic thing, who could be so dumb as to think that wasn't done, or that this thing didn't have oil in it. Anyway, we left one guy navigating overnight who apparently didn't realize the California coast does not run perfectly north/south like it's fucking Minecraft, and the next morning we were a couple of hundred miles off the coast, when we were supposed to pretty much keep land in sight the whole way. We had no wind, and again started the diesel to head east, and it smoked all over the place and died. No oil. And one of the Boomers had killed the battery so we had no radio.

Any time I had a hunch on someone who I knew had shitty intentions and was a shitty human being, but some people in my circle placed faith in them. Only to be bitten in the ass by said person. I'll warn you if there are bear traps in the woods, it is up to you as to whether or not you'll avoid those woods or avoid those bear traps.

I knew it was total bullshit when Purdue Pharma was telling doctors (and patients): "Ackshually, OxyContin® is non-addictive, because of its patented extended release formula! It's a far better option than traditional painkillers, and should be prescribed for even moderate pain!"

Thanks to the ✡Sackler✡ Family. there are over 500,000 Americans who have died from opioid overdoses since 2000. What's equally insidious is that the backlash caused by the surge in addiction meant that the pendulum has swung way too far in the other direction, and now people who genuinely need strong opiate medication to control chronic pain are severely undermedicated and treated like criminals for trying to have their medical needs properly treated.

Thankfully, one guy had a handheld radio and after bobbing there like a cork for most of the day, we got in touch with the Coast Guard, who came out and towed us back in to Morrow Bay. We looked like such dumb asses.

I just remembered I didn't even tell the best part. In the process of trying to "fix the engine", one of the boomers broke a through-hull fitting and the boat started flooding. We had to patch it with this slime and fat shit that comes in a block and hope it held. But at that point we hadn't contacted the Coast Guard yet. I thought we'd go down and I had my lifejacket and surival shit ready to go. I was not going to watch one of those retarded fucking Boomers float off with it. Oh, and when the Coast Guard did get there, they asked what sort of fenders we had (the bumper things on the side of the boat), and the guy my age started describing the model of guitar he had back home. I could not believe how retarded our whole boat was. Ever since that trip, I've assumed every other guy in a situation like that is a retarded nigger and planned around them.

As I've very smugly bragged about before, I staunchly refused to buy into any media "digital ecosystem" back when they were new and The Cloud™ was the next big thing still viewed favorably by normies and spergs alike. I remember getting eviscerated on various online forums in the early 2010s warning that people were putting all their eggs into baskets controlled by megacorps and was called a neo-luddite who was living in the past. "BUT MUH HECKIN STEAM SALES", they all cried.

Now every time Sony or Apple or Netflix or Valve rolls out some new byzantine policy or summarily bans an account with thousands of dollars of purchases, I laugh and laugh and laugh and peruse my terabytes of games, movies, music, and other media that I have unlimited, unconditional access to forever.

AI.
I was saying that diffusion models will be replacing artists back when Dall-E mini was just unveiled and most people were just laughing at that idea while saying that it can't draw hands(it's been able to do it for years now) and how its drawings lack "soul"(nobody cared about it anyway).
Same with LLMs and white collar jobs.

Steam is literally the only time "the cloud" has worked out, and it's probably fucked as soon as Gabe dies.

They come to resent you if you rub it in, best not to give them any additional excuses to disassociate from the truth.

Hello, fellow data collector! I also thought The Cloud™ was (and still is) for fags... Now, not only do I have a nicely curated collection of media, but I get to laugh at the retards who bought into that stupid shit and now complain when something gets pulled from whatever streaming service they're dumb enough to pay for.

I remember my Zoomer nephews making fun of me using torrents because, "Streaming, bruh!".

Who's laughing now, bitch?

When Synthetic Man's "appreciation" thread was made, I said all the man does is complain about video games and acts like an antisocial, anti-woke weirdo. They didn't believe me. Now, he has a lolcow thread.

I have lost over at least a dozen friends to opiates. I dont want to count because its depressing, and most of it all started with people lining up to snort the shit at 'parties.'

Being at a party and you and maybe one or two other people being conscious is a fun party.

Same here, amigo, same here... and that's to say nothing of the suicides and people who ended up in prison for decades on top of the ones who are dead.

The one decent thing about getting old has been the fact that most of the people I knew who got into that shit have either already died or finally got their life together and quit.

I remember 25 years ago, people used to make jokes about "Hillbilly Heroin", because it hit here in Appalachia first, and it wasn't until rich kids in more prosperous places started getting hooked and dying that you ever heard the words "opiate crisis". This part of the country has been fucked over by the wealthy so badly with the loss of steel and coal jobs that have been shipped overseas, but that wasn't enough, those rich pricks had to start selling us poison to kill ourselves too.
