But I do suspect that the reason he's avoiding pushing updates to the main branch is that the latest patch notes from 2023 say

The rest of Animus (Chapter 3) is being actively developed.

If he puts out some tiny bugfix update on main, people that already weren't aware that the game has been abandoned for 13 months, would be aware after. Wouldn't really help with the negative reviews complaining about the game being abandoned.

He is trying to figure out how to also roach the actual game development instead of finding time to work on his game to make meaningful progress, i'm beyond impressed with how flippantly he says this in public.
He probably has eons more revenue compared to the average starving indie dev, Twitch subs are probably a nice little cushion of money every month, and he could just make streams special events where higher amounts of money gets dropped for more sporadic streams. He has the indie dev dream of not having to scrape for pennies in between releases and his lazyness combined with his ego still makes him begrudgingly work on the game and even look for ways to game Steam's new policies that savaged his game more directly.

Could also ask my friend more about the time they worked with Mald during the Undertale days, there was drama from what I heard but they're having a hard time remembering exactly what but it resulted in the split and death of the community.

I think that might be interessting since Undertale seems to be one of the "inspriations" for Heartbound. And I haven't seen anything about that, so if it really happened that might add a new piece.

Imagine him during drama in an Undertale community going like "Insane behaviour. I worked at blizzard for 7 years, I will make a better game with a better community, you just watch..."

Mind, I don't necessarily endorse all of the speech here. Just because you have the unquestionable right to say something doesn't mean you should. But I was both impressed with and heartened by the nuanced understanding in a number of posts.

Also, for the fellow who called me "Creamy Mario"--when I was a teacher, my students did call me "Mr. Creamy" (as well as C-Dawg, Creamalicious, Ceraminator, etc.). And that comment happily brought me back to that time.

There are a number of other things I wish I could say, but I cannot, as service to my client's interests comes ahead of any personal expressive interests. It is good to know, though, that not everyone has been mislead on the facts or the law.

Also, if you come across an instance of censorial bullying, misusing the DMCA or the like to silence "the little guy," you know where to send the person. Or if a content producer gets free speech law wrong and needs being corrected, please send them my way.
