I think Thor both wants games to not die but, as a shity retard developer, can't fathom spending the time re-working old stuff to change it to adapt to a change he assumed would be called of developers.

Thor is a bush league confidence man. What a faggot.

I mean, does he really? He's just a completely self-centered sleazeball who cannot think beyond the scope of his own self-interests. If this initiative could hamper the development of his own live-service game he's working on, he'll try to tear it down even if this means consumers continue getting fucked over. Simple as. But I do agree he's a faggot.

There's one particular line in the video that I hope the roach seethes about.

It may also be extremely emotionally triggering and downright offensive to some, if you read it, you're doing it at your own risk
Everyone blindly agrees to TOS, but TOS can't make something that is illegal valid. So if new EU laws require (new) games to have an end of life plan, then companies will have to do that to access that market. They only need to do whatever the bare minimum is to comply, and hopefully that is enough to make archiving/playing possible, even if it takes extra work from the community. It's likely not going to increase costs significantly. That's all that has to be said about this IMO.

Everyone blindly agrees to TOS, but TOS can't make something that is illegal valid.
My issue is that begging for the state to decide what is legal and what is illegal is what caused most of the mess in the first place
Even if the state is sane and righteous in declaring what's legal and what is illegal, enforcement of the law is still a state monopoly, you simply have no other legal means of appeal or alternatives
So the people begging for the law to change in a good way are placing their hopes in the same institution that used its legal machinery to criminalize modding, outlaw DRM circumvention tools, enforce software monopolies, punish emulator devs, protect DRM under copyright law, hand publishers the enforcement power to remotely revoke access, and so much more. And all of that in a system where enforcement is carried out through opaque bureaucracies, lopsided court cases, and extrajudicial threats where a multibillion dollar company can get state backing to crush some guy hosting a fan server, and yet no consumer has any realistic way to enforce even basic contract expectations without drowning in legal fees and regulatory indifference.
Do you see my issue with "we need govt to step in and fix this?"
It boils down to "We know the system screws us 100 times over, but there's nowhere else to go, so let's just scream and sob until it fucks us more gently"

Just while PirateSoftware's involvement with the SKG initiative is relevant, two of Thor's butt buddies, ThePrimeagen and Theo.gg, came out with videos at the time of the drama to muddy the waters about the campaign because Thor was receiving heat. Theo is a complete shill faggot and just reacted to Thor's video, but Prime says he's intending to give a fair and balanced take as a good faith actor, he gets half way through reading the FAQ then gives up half way through and starts yapping against a strawman argument and sweeping for Thor saying he dindu nuffin. They both receive a lot of pushback from the audience in the comments.

It's not that Mald doesn't understand, he does.

I legit think that he's a game industry plant and got his possition because he pushes this oi vey, shutting games down narrative hard, while larping being a dev. Seriously, his only (real) credentials is his dad working at Blizzard and him having a game maker shovelware in his name, this fucking meme porfolio wouldn't fly IRL. But every other "game dev" podcaster boasted him up, despite all the bullshit. Either they are just as bad as him, or it's because the managment told them to put up with his facade, go on Streaming events etc.

If Night Management had all their creators in cahoots for drama and coordinating slander content on those who are not members, I don't think it's stretch to assume Jason being pushed to shill this own nothing and be happy mindset.

What's their management company?

Theo's video is so bad, just dunking on commenters while sipping the misinformation juice so bad and dickriding corpos. Sad.

Your only other options are to boycott live service/component games, or get enough of the source code leaked by a helpful insider or by hacking the companies. The situation CAN improve with such a law, with minimal government/court interference. Maybe it won't actually go well, but it can if everyone toes the line.

OT: Emulator devs should already be operating as if Nintendo hit squads are coming to kill them. Total anonymity, distribution through torrents or similar, donations by cryptocurrency if anything at all.

i geg'd so hard when he said i talked about it from a game developer perspective now that i think about it was kinda key'd on ross by never calling him a game dev iirc more streamer content creator

Star Wars Battlefront 2 comes to mind but what ultimately killed that kind of gambling-esque microtransactions was, ironically enough, regulation.
Loot boxes are still around, although segregated mainly in sports games. The industry just moved on from loot boxes to battle passes for the time being. I think the EU has outlawed online gambling to where it's disabled in some video games.

So basically a "vote with your wallet" type of argument. I can't avoid acting cynical towards that argument because I honestly don't remember a time where it has worked. In regards to this Stop Killing Games movement, I see it as fighting fire with fire. The consumer is taking action however they can to say to these companies: enough is enough. No way these unhappy consumers themselves could enforce long term change without a similar entity, in this case regulation, to aid into that goal. Ubisoft needs to be put in check however possible, so that their shady practices could cease or at the least, be held accountable.

my favorite part was having a clip of thor talking interjected with a very passionate and iratated "NOOOO" every 20 seconds. I love when you can feel the emotion, in this case, frustration.

I like his honesty. Seems like he really tried hard to do something for the benefit of others and is just really tired of eating crow for it. Perfectly reasonable to wash hands of it, and I hope he takes some time to just enjoy himself. It was sad to hear him talk about how the whole situation has also impacted his financial situation since he hasn't been able to create content people want out of a personal obligation to work on this. Hope come July he just steps back completely.

why must every pie thor sticks his thumb in curdle in an instant?

I love how right after he whined in Discord about managem comments, he decides to misrepresent Ross a third time on xitter.
He always has to be the victim.

I was curious to look up SKG mentions in malds discord and funny enough it's just Myke working overtime at the meatrider factory. It was too reddit for me.

Outside of that, a lot of the people calling the bill unrealistic and vague aren't even from the EU it seems. US consumerism at its peak. Buy everything and own nothing.

I mean....yea? It's already scared a ton of developers outside of Sony out, and Sony is going to get the message after a few hundred million more is loss (if they haven't already because all we have is words saying they totally aren't scared so far). There's a huge difference between revoking access to a game you own and shutting off servers for an online only game. If you buy an online only game/game that the majority of the content revolves around some guy giving it to you and you expect endless support you're literally retarded ("you" as in "reddit").

I know Mald wants to be able to retroactively ban you from even knowing his game exists if he feels like it which is also retarded but in the smaller context of just not buying live service games....you can just do that. I've managed to do it my entire life somehow.

A more tangible, real issue is licensing allowing things to be retroactively patched out of shit. Tons of music/skins/etc can be patched out of games in your library at any time for this reason (and not even touching on the games themselves getting delisted because of shit like a song in the credits in SH Downpour, or one character in MK9)

It's a good thing SKG was not about forcing publishers to endlessly support online only games, since that's not what the initiative was about and you're just repeating Thor's strawman of the movement.
And the initial big case Ross was highlighting was The Crew going offline, where the majority of content was for a single player experience, but still wasn't able to be played since it relied on Ubisoft's servers.

I agree this is a big issue as well and should be considered as part of game preservation.
