Evangelion never makes excuses for its characters. They constantly make bad decisions and do questionable things because they have experienced trauma or have justified it in their head.

Whenever she writes characters like Aliana or Niva or Gardevoir, she will always make excuses for them, the narrative will twist and bend so that she doesn't have to be mean to her favorite lesbians. She constantly bails her pet characters out of consequences because she's more interested in being comfortable rather than writing.

I'll have to find them, there's a bunch of madhouse asks where people pointed out how inappropriate G acted, and how often she ignored consent and Lily would literally respond with a picture of G rolling her eyes. Evangelion doesn't do that.

She complained about protagonist-centric morality before but the kicker is that Lily is so fucking guilty of it. Aliana and Niva can literally have powers that were deliberately written to be portrayed as evil but it's okay, they're the protags so it's okay. Aliana, a twenty year old woman, is just a child. At least when Shinji is a shitty person the narrative acknowledges it as much as it acknowledges when Misato sucks or Asuka is a bitch or Gendo wins runner-up award for world's worst dad. The idea that the non-antagonistic characters all have to reflect the author's morals and views is pretty stupid and restrictive and I wholeheartedly disagree with that. There's this cool word called nuance. There's even more words you can string into a sentence like this :

Authors can experiment with shit, nobody said their works have to uphold their morals and political views every single time.

Honestly I think that Evangelion's far too much for Lily to handle. If she couldn't even handle Madoka Magica (which while dense in its themes is pretty easy to follow) this may do her in, she'll have no clue what she's watching or how to remotely approach the themes. Moreover, the added context of what Eva deconstructs as a mecha anime helps to further understand what it's trying to achieve but even that is far too nuanced for Lily. It'll be funny to see her stumble through it, though. Take the money and review it. I'm begging.

Lily knows that any video made on Evangelion would be made in bad faith and really, really easy to pick apart and destroy by both fans of that show and people who are way smarter than her and actually understood what Eva was going for. She knows that in making a video like that, she'd basically just be inviting more harrassment and 'Lily Orchard Doesn't Understand' videos- a steadily growing genre. Although, frankly, it would still be less embarrassing than the pokemon video she uploaded in complete confidence. Like, okay fine Eva was too complicated for you. Fine. She more or less admitted Pokemon was too much for her and those games are primarily targeted at children.

There's this idea in the Pokemon Community that there's a lot of people who treat these games like a a boss gauntlet. It's just a game full of bosses and everything in between those boss fights is worthless like the story, catching pokemon to fill out the pokedex, exploring, bonding with your pokemon, etc. That's Lily, except add on the psychotic need to solo all of those bosses with Gardevoir. Nothing about a pokemon game matters except that Gardevoir is in it and that she can make all the bosses look stupid when she runs through them with an over-leveled pokemon. Calm down girl, N isn't Kevin from first-grade who called you gay because you liked Gardevoir more than Rayquaza. It's code. It doesn't care what you beat it with, it's programmed to behave the same regardless of if you struggled through to the finish line or easily beat them.

My favorite part about Lily is her insistence that the awful shit that happened to Cameron and Courtney were their own faults, the result of their own actions, but the awful shit that happened to Lily was all happenstance. One big conga line of trauma back to back.

We'll probably never know what went on in the Peet house even though we can make as many good guesses as we can, but I think just the fact everything somehow always happens to Lily rather than is a direct result of her own actions never makes sense to me. It's a mecha anime that has the same 'genre defining' pedigree that Avatar and Utena have, largely because the creator's life had taken a downward spiral during the production and it went from being a typical action series into an oddly self-reflective and deconstructive work.

The mods got wise and banned her IP. Lily was very upset but couldn't show it.

What? Eva is bad now because it paved the way for a lot of popular tropes? They do realize that the tropes in Eva were actually fleshed out before they got Chinese Whispers Game-d, right? Madoka Magica was considered groundbreaking for its deconstruction of popular tropes as well and then far too many magical girl manga and anime after it missed the point and regurgitated the most memorable parts. This happens all the goddamn time, shows and films and books that created a strong impression are bound to get copycats who failed to comprehend the reason why the original worked. That doesn't mean it sucks, it means it was good enough to become derivative in of itself. Do you know the sheer amount of Star Wars copycats that are out there?

I'm now realizing how braindead Lily's fandom is. They know just as little about how writing works as she does.

Rewatching Korra for the next video and I'm reminded that what annoyed me most about the show was the way they would set up a complicated and nuanced issue and then go "Actually never mind, that guy was a liar and engineered everything from the start, kill him and protect the status quo! Don't think just shonen your way out of it!"

This motherfucking guy waltzes in and in two episodes lays down one of the most interesting conflicts Avatar has ever seen, that would put Chris Avellone's ethical dilemmas to shame. One that puts independence and cultural autonomy against a real problem with the world that is going to get increasingly worse. A conflict that is exacerbated not just by him, but by his brother. A conflict where neither of them are without failings and problems.
Better even, it parallels with an identical but lower stakes conflict between Tenzin and his siblings. Creating a parity between the A plot and B plot of the season.
There's no right answer, picking either side is going to cause problems, and the Avatar has the mediate and does so successfully.
AND THEN the writers pull KITE SATAN out of the ASS and making him the secret mastermind behind everything, retcon Korra's success at mediating a tense conflict into her actually being the world's most useful rube, and then all that interesting stuff is thrown away for a big anime battle.


All they had to do was NOT force a villain into an already interesting and ethically complicated issue. All they had to do was commit to not having a villain. And they couldn't do it, and they chickened out, and they forced the worst lore dump on everyone and ended with kaiju battle.
FUCKING HELL. You had the best story that would have put The Last Airbender to SHAME, and you CHICKENED OUT!

It's not impossible, but it doesn't feel like she can comprehend/handle shows if they don't have a YA/Y7 rating. It's strange, because she really seems to enjoy "coffe-fic" style stories, but refuses to watch any types of shows where those types of plots are common. A lot of kids shows are simplistic plots about kids saving the world in some fashion or another, usually with some sort of gradeschool moral lesson for the characters to learn. There's a lot of "adult" shows that are more slice of life and basically just about people living their lives and overcoming more mundane struggles without there being some grand antagonist. And if she didn't want drama at all and just wanted something that was fun and slice of life, there's no shortage of sitcoms available. Heck, a lot of those shows, both drama and sitcom, also tend to have a family focus, typically showing the family in more wholesome situations where they're banding together to overcome their problems and what not, which seems to be something Lily enjoys. Although there's also usually some family conflict in those shows, so that might ruin it since Lily has such a narrow view of what she wants to see.
