Politics can enhance art when treated properly - that is to say, with an open mind and a willingness to explore nuance. Thing is, you know Jim Sterling and everyone else spouting that all art is political have no interest in any nuance. When they say they want politics in games, they aren't talking about all politics, just their own views presented in a one dimensional, sterile manner. Basically, their views are right and good, everything else is bad and evil. If they had their way, all games would just be thinly veiled 'Capitalism horrible, this is why socialism is the best' allegories.I think politics can absolutely enhance art, including video games. Jim just treats it like some joyless obligation, like taking a multivitamin. And he also acts like games or media should serve primarily as framing devices for politics. As though I’m so fucking stupid and childish I need to be spooonfed my viewpoints by a shooter game.
It’s like diversity. I like characters in a cast to be different from one another: in viewpoints, personality, background, and yes, appearance. It makes the work more interesting. But making a character “queer” doesn’t automatically make them interesting.
Remember the bitching that Kingdom Come Deliverance didn't have blacks in it? Remember Sterling whining that the guy who made FNAF was a Christian? He doesn't give a fuck about 'art' or 'mature gaymz', he's a petty ideologue who wants the world to stop and bend over for him. My way or the high way, racist sexist xenophobic fascists!
