Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Why the fuck is Total Biscuit included in this thread anyway? I don't know anything about him other than he's dead but if he was a lolcow why didn't he get his own thread?
Because back in the day they were incredibly similar content creators. Jim was a bit more out-there and already into his skits albeit in a lot more digestible manner, whereas TB was more professional (in his videos) and more influential than Jim has ever really managed to approach.

Like a lot of people at the time Jim was a bit of a TB dick-rider being one of the only people to have repeat appearances on the Co-Optional podcast and was, I believe, the person responsible for introducing him to Laura Kate Dale which lead to many of his famous meltdowns including the "are traps gay?" debacle.
At the time the overlap was extreme enough that Jim effectively inherited TB's audience when he died. I first discovered Jim through Co-Optional and he seemed a natural fit to pick up the torch where TB left it, only for Jim to slowly go off the rails to an extreme and in directions that were both unexpected and obvious in hindsight.
Jim's always been somewhat open about his history of mental illness even all those years ago but hearing someone talk about it is a bit different from seeing it like you can now. The realisation that his funny surreal humour skits weren't as much of a joke as I originally thought was a rough one, especially as they slowly escalated.

Ladies and guntlemen...we got 'em.

🎊🎊🎊JIM HAS OFFICIALLY LOST 100,000 SUBSCRIBERS 🎊🎊🎊
I miss old Jim Sterling. Years ago, back in Steam Greenlight with his off-brand humor and willingness to discuss topics other youtubers didn't seem to care about, like many small, indie games. It feels like I've lost a friend, going from watching his new videos release as they rolled out, to the malaise they've now become and transgender nonsense.

I've often wondered why others claim to long for DarksydePhil, Spoony or Cosmo to "return to their glory days". Never really empathized with that, but I never watched their content before they became lolcows. Guess now I know what that feels like, to be one of those forsaken fans.

I think this might be the first time Jim has made comments on actually relevent things in the UK and to no surprise its bandwagoning. For anyone not in the UK this is trending on twitter in the UK and it usually doesn't look like this, next weekend is the Queen's platinum jubilee and naturally you see union jacks everywhere because this is a once in a lifetime kind of thing so everyone is getting in the mood.

This has always been my thoughts too. People would tell me he was a hero and shit for bringing attention to scams with his greenlight videos, but you'd have to be a fucking retard to not see 99% of those games for what they were. And all of his constant bitching about AAA was stuff that was very apparent as well
It was very strange watching someone rag on for hours about obviously rushed out asset flips that no one would buy even in a Bad Rats so-bad-it's-funny sense. TB usually had one-notes at least, rarely returning, but Jim would have entire months worth of content dedicated to the stupidest drama imaginable. The main issue with Digital Homicide was that they were also Lolcows, and decided the response to bad reviews was a DMCA and subsequent lolsuit. Dedicating hours to playing an obviously shit game just to unironically say "don't play" is like Linus Tech Tips spending 40 minutes reviewing shit he finds at the local Chinese dollar store, as if anyone paying $15 for a uPhone would a) watch that and use it to inform their purchase and b) influence the industry to change those products. I think a lot of the audience stayed for as long as it did because they viewed as filling a similar to Ashens, sarcastic reviews of tat, but it wasn't and TB would probably get extremely irate if you thought it was. Jim was just chasing easy content, far as I can tell.
Anyone that thought Jim was a hero for making fun of asset flippers is retarded. It was just funny to see the duo scramble to try and make up excuses for their scam being unraveled.
It was a little bit with Digital Homicide because it was more related to the gamer side of Youtube fighting back against DMCA and copyright claims, it was just treated like they were fighting Nintendo, and then they rode those coattails as if they'd done so.
That was such a weird time. JS and TB would both rail about how shit AAA gaming is and how they're ripping people off, that there needs to be more indie games, then scream bloody murder that Steam wasn't gatekeeping their precious video game garden well enough. A common phrase bandied about was that Greenlight was "cluttering" Steam's storefront. It always seemed like such a "eat my cake and have it too" argument.

TB and JS always reminded me of an airsoft gun, while someone like Jeff Gerstmann was an actual gun. Sure, they may look and even feel the same, have many of the same features and actions, but one is the real deal and the other is not.
Gerstmann always tries to give a fair shake and will give praise even in badly scored reviews that deserve it, but TB would actively seek out shit he knew he wouldn't like just to rag on it.

I understand that Greenlight lead to a lot of crap, but the review and refund system had solved that issue. It's almost like reverse-shilling, instead of reviewing Skyrim-hype games TB and Jim review games where no one would defend them, it was patently obvious what the faults were, and there was a huge audience so the developers would immediately get swamped by tweens. I remember one of them reviewing some shitty crafting survival game circa ~2015 and the reviewer left a comment on the Steam discussion board saying they were a student who wanted to sell their one-man game for a buck to fund future projects as they learned. It was probably the worst way to enter the industry and share your work, but at the same time it put a face to the crap they reviewed and the scorn with which they did it. Someone just wanted to share their work with enthusiasm, and instead they were hounded and shit on because some famous personality picked them out of crowd and said they were personally responsible for fucking up Steam and the games industry.

I do enjoy how the man aligned with the people who insert their ugly ass trans/rainbow flag EVERYWHERE they possible can is triggered by some Union Jacks for a once-in-a-lifetime event.

I trust he'll be consistent and tweet the same when Pride kicks off next month and those dogshit flags are hanging everywhere.

Only if it’s the original Pride flag and not the hideous actually-under-copyright “new” one that includes the trans flag and black and brown people, because I guess having darker skin is a sexuality? I love (“love”) the logic that a fucking rainbow, universal symbol of diversity, wasn’t inclusive enough. Do they think the original six colours each represented a different type of gay?

”Oh my God, those green gays are like, the cis-het white men of kweers.”

Also, people like Sterling seem to think being proud of anything besides your sexuality and undefinable, all encompassing “gender identity” is a mark of shame.

Jim and TB never gave an iota of a fuck about consumer advocacy. It was mirage they cloaked themselves in. I had a really long back and forth with TB on some game article's comment section about him raging on Unreal Engine 3 and framerate locks. (remember TB's Framerate Police that flagged tons of visual novels and spreadsheet-based sport sims?) I tried explaining that UE3 does not lock physics to framerate automatically and that tying physics to framerate isn't a de facto "lazy" move, as well as how DLC rollouts solidified and retained developer talent for medium-creating positions. A lot of people really don't fucking get it because they either weren't around at the time or they simply didn't know how the industry worked. Back in the Wolf3D days and even going to the Halo days, 75% to 90% of a studio's staff would be lucky if they were retained after a title shipped. Remember CoD: MW? Infinity Ward fired over 70% of its over 1,000-person staff after that game released. Today, that churn is nearly gone. You can argue the benefits and detriments of this effect on consumers, but it is undoubtedly a better atmosphere for developers that *can* benefit consumers, too. But TB couldn't see that. It was all just "lazy devs" and "do better" nonsense from a guy that knew nearly nothing about industry dynamics and processes.
I did not like the kind of person he was the last few years, but he objectively did help PC gaming and esports when he was alive. There were many PC port issues and missing features that he advocated for that are now commonplace and he played a part in bettering that.

I also love it because it's the most perfect, simple example of what incredible attention-seeking narcissists troons and assorted genderspecials are.

The Pride rainbow has always represented all identities, equally --that's the entire fucking point of the flag-- but some must be more represented than others, apparently.

I suppose I should have expected the contrarian lefty tits like Jim to have come out in full force for this, but it honestly never occurred to me. Earlier on Twitter it told me "Nazi Germany" was trending in the UK alongside concerns about the impact of Nationalism, all because the milksops that infest Britain had to look at the flag of the country they live in for once and refuse to at least shut up in the face of noting the longest reigning monarchs new landmark.
Jim didn't have to come back to TERF island, sacrificing his identity and freedoms and safety to do so, but he has and by God he's going to milk it. I'll expect an unironic discussion of how "concerning" views of houses with England flags in their windows and white vans in the drive are next.

Also black people.

I have a feeling that half the people in this thread are describing some other guy.

Where do people keep getting this idea that he (past tense) never cared about consumer advocacy? That was the whole angle of the show, the bombastic populist who speaks up for the people. He covered the debate about game length, gameplay mechanics that respect the players time, value for money for DLC, crowdfunding and preorders, ease of access with difficulty levels, dishonest marketing tactics, refunds and of course moneymaking practices. He went on the problem with review embargoes and the lure of exposure, about the ethics of mods and content piracy, the value of single player games and the myopia of games as a service. Whether you agree with his takes on these subjects at the time non-withstanding, this was his main focus. Where I think he seems to have come apart is in the recognition that the general consumer audience didn't appreciate his advocacy and demonstrated that they are effortless to please one moment and incoherently entitled the next. Many people don't care about lootboxes or half-baked games or abandoned roadmaps or value for money or sexism or the workplace culture of the companies they buy their games from. They just want the next years releases, they get sucked into the hype train (or at least they did) and ignore everything he talked about that's been aimed at starting a conversation at improving the industry. I've always felt that if nothing else, that mission was genuine and to an extent, a degree of bitterness on the trajectory of a passion that got one through a difficult childhood is completely understandable.

That's the problem, easy mode sounds innocent and in retard's minds it is. But it means a lesser product to appeal to the lowest common denominator. People like Jim, who have never created anything and only exist by being parasites on other people's hard work, have zero issues fucking everyone else for their laziness and/or virtue signalling.
The only logical rational I can come up with is that you believe if From's Soul's games had a non-mandatory difficulty setting lower than the standard that introduced more players and made them more money, then you believe From would jettison their dedicated player-base to move into more lucrative but less challenging games?

I'm not being facetious, I can accept there's a genuine merit to brand preservation for something as unique an experience as Dark Souls, but you can't articulate that in terms of 'parasites' who spent the same $60 you did without sounding like you're massaging your prostate with a diamond turd.

The Pride rainbow has always represented all identities, equally, but some must be more represented than others, apparently.
I replied to her on Twitter with a stock photo of Pride flags in exactly that configuration. The...I have to guess unironic shallowness of that statement is just unbelievable from somebody who used to parody this shit. Like, it's not as though the people she's referring to left much room to innovate with.

I don't remember who it was but they pointed out that the pride flag with the trans+black/brown chevron one made it look like it was thrusting forward, like it was invading into the LGBT space just like it is in real life.

Covering something does not make you give a damn, and Jim has always picked easy targets to critic that his friends agree with (and yeah I'm including his shit take on Breath of the Wild). Even more, I can never recall Jim praising something good that AAA Devs do. His overwhelming negativity (that makes it seem he hates games), and repeating the same takes ad-infinitum as probably hurt the gaming industry more than him just being quiet.

No you fucking retard. In the real world you only have X men hours to make a product. If you take away Y hours to make an entirely different user experience, then you'd be left with X-Y hours of development for the base product. How can you watch so many videos about the industry and not realize that Devs are always working under constraints and a lot of bad designs are made due running out of money/time?

That's really the best argument I can make against Jim, he speaks so much about game developers as some nebulous super rich organizations rather than companies headed by real people, to the point his fans are incapable of thinking on the most basic shit.

For the record, that's a recurring issue with FromSoft games in general. They get very ambitious with the scope, have to cut out a ton of stuff to stay on budget/deadline, and balance in the late game (and particularly New Game+) is often very skewed due to them not having had the time/resources to test things properly. Elden Ring came out an incredibly buggy mess with clearly dummied out areas and very poor NG+ balance and no one was surprised in the slightest by it.

In fact, that's... kind of the charm with their games. Go figure.

It's actually insane. I follow Jim on Twitter to keep an eye on the crazy shit he posts but holy fuck. The dude genuinely compared "Hey, they have some flags up because they're celebrating a once in a lifetime event" to Nazi Germany. Because... you know. Of course, everything is Nazi Germany.

Went and checked the comments? I was like "Surely people will be explaining to him what a retard take this is?"

No. It's all these people ass patting themselves, pretending to be scared that the British Gestapo are coming for them, people claiming "I know lots of World War 2 veterans and all of them are disgusted by this". I'm quite new to Twitter, but it is truly stunning to me how many people suddenly "know a lot of people from relevant X group" when it is time for them to counter prove the standard narrative about that group. "Well, guys, I actually know a lot of people from 1930 who actually loved gay marriage and supported 6 years olds becoming Trans!"

I think basically EVERY country will have a day at some point where they will fly their own flag. These turbospeds however connect you liking your country to you being a Nazi lol
